It is cheap enough for me to buy it and try it at home. If it has all of the features I require for work then I’ll recommend it for the businesses I work for. Judging by the preview FCPX will at least be a very useful tool for some of my personal film projects. I’m hoping that it will be complete enough for me to not need to go back to the old FCP Studio for things like color correction. One major question for me is: How fast will the Matrox MXO2 get an upgrade for the new Final Cut.

I find it unlikely that they will drop log and capture. Many broadcasters still output to a tape format and that requires that final cut control a deck. I imagine that if it can output to tape still, then it wouldn’t make a lot of sense for it to drop the input from tape. If Apple dropped Log and Capture from the software, you would see most users that require tape based workflow opt not to upgrade. I doubt that Apple would be so dumb.

Are you using any composite modes like multiply? Sometimes the broadcast safe filter doesn’t work when there is more than one layer being combined. If this is the case then export that particular section that is going out of luma safe as a quicktime and then apply the broadcast safe filter to the rendered video.

A little off the subject, but a video about islamic discussions using explosions and targeting sites scares the living hell out of me.

On your render queue in After Effects below the render settings there should be a setting called output module. Within that setting you should be able to change the type of compression you’re using. The default is set to lossless but you’ll want to change that setting to match the compression that you’re using in Final Cut Pro.

  • HDV uses MPEG2 compression which can be processor intensive. The compression of HDV is spread out over multiple frames which may explain why you have a delay when stopping your footage playback. When I edit HDV footage I usually convert it to an uncompressed format when capturing. You may need to convert your footage to an intermediate codec like apple pro res 422 (although i have encountered problems with apple pro res as well). What frame rate are you working with? What are your system specs? How is your sequence set up?

I cut a show that is shot on a JVC brand HDV camera that is shot at 720p. I wouldn’t recommend doing anything through the firewire on that deck in to final cut. We use a Kona card to capture footage and control the deck using the 9-pin connector. We also encountered timecode problems with footage that was captured in drop frame. Unless this issue has been fixed I’d also suggest that you shoot in non-drop frame.
