  • How do I get device control of HDV deck?

Posted by Rory Keenan on December 4, 2008 at 8:25 pm

I’m cutting a documentary and I need to capture some footage shot on a JVC brand HDV camera.
I believe the footage was shot in 59.94fps at 1080i
I’m playing the footage on a JVC brand BR-HD50 deck ….. connected to my Mac with firewire.

Does anyone have experience with this???

My problem is I can’t get device control of the deck.
I can play the deck manually and “Capture Now” …. But I’d really like full device control from the log and Capture window.
The Log & Capture window says “VTR OK” at the bottom

I’ve tried several different “Capture Presets” but I can’t get device control.
    Do I need Key Span???
    Any help would be appreciated

PS (yes I made sure the setting on the deck was switched to “remote”)

That recorder is not on the list of approved devices to start.

I cut a show that is shot on a JVC brand HDV camera that is shot at 720p. I wouldn’t recommend doing anything through the firewire on that deck in to final cut. We use a Kona card to capture footage and control the deck using the 9-pin connector. We also encountered timecode problems with footage that was captured in drop frame. Unless this issue has been fixed I’d also suggest that you shoot in non-drop frame.
