Try making a composition of a small square rolling in 3D space to make one piece of spinning confetti. Now, import that comp into a new comp, and create a new solid. Apply particle playground to the new solid, but specify the single confetti layer as your Layer Map in your Particle P. settings. Read up in the Help-Effects Help files for more info on how to randomize the confetti layer start so that they’re not all synchronized.

That’s easier than drinking water. I’ve been using AE since 3.1. I can’t believe I overlooked that. I guess it pays to read the new manual when I upgrade!Ok, you both get to be my heros for the day. I’ll even throw in an extra day, since it’s Sunday in southern California. 🙂

December 11, 2005 at 9:05 pm in reply to: ANY maya user with ANY luck extracting z info to AE PLEEEEEZE respondThanks, guys.
I’m trying to just get some objects that move away from the camera to fade out, but quickly learned that if I use fog to do it, I kill my ability to use an alpha channel for compositing because fog is, well, opaque!Related to that, what is the z depth a calculation of? Is it the physical z position of the object in maya? Or is it the distance of the object from the camera lens? I’m moving my camera around in maya, and thinking that this will probably make my z values change. Is that correct?
Thanks,

…make sure you save your illustrator file out as ver. 8.
That seems to be the only version that Invigorator will tolerate from me.-Greg

December 10, 2005 at 10:43 pm in reply to: ANY maya user with ANY luck extracting z info to AE PLEEEEEZE respondHmmm. So far it looks like the RLA file is the only one that AE will even recognize, but it has some nasty aliasing on it, as if the z channel didn’t support any anti-aliasing. (2-bit color?)
If anyone from Adobe would like to comment, we’d really appreciate being pointed to a list of currently supported formats/applications to be used with the 3D tools.
Thanks,
Gregp.s. I’m using 6.0. Let me know if this was fixed in 6.5

December 9, 2005 at 2:53 am in reply to: Pasting Illustrator path into AfterEffects while maintaining screen positionIn all my Illustrator art for AE, I create a layer with a rectangle that has no fill or line. Doesn’t matter how big it is, as long as my art never exceeds it.
When you import to AE, everything should line up. (you may need to specify “document size”, not “crop”) The added benefit to this, and the original reason I started doing it, is because invariably I’d need to go back and modify my original art. But if my modification make my layers larger (than a pretend bounding box that all the layers fit inside), it would shift my center point on all the layers. Having an invisible rectangle layer that was always bigger than any art solved this.
