    Hi Chris,

We usually require at least 50% to start the project and the balance is due once they approve a watermarked version, and before we release the final version. We also request that they provide credit card info for payment. We use PayPal.

Yes ALWAYS have a contract. This protects both parties and everyone is on the “same page” for the project.

Thanks Mike. We always get everything in writing. But the hard part is booking a crew a month or more out, then finding the client decides to cancel. I’m wondering if there should be a non-refundable deposit. After all, we are turning down other work because we have that shoot scheduled and a signed agreement.

    Thanks Todd,

I too have never been burned because I have a contract and deposit. In my case I pay my crew at the end of the shoot.
I’m not in position to finance a clients project. I always need to at the very least cover my out of pocket costs. If I get burned on my rate, that’s okay. But I can’t be left holding the bag for crew or acting talent.

August 20, 2018 at 7:08 pm in reply to: Chicago Video Crew?

    Hi Terry,

Thanks but I don’t think the budget will allow for crew travel and hotels. If that was the case, I could bring my crew from Florida. Unless you think you can do the whole thing for under 2K per day including travel.

July 31, 2018 at 7:45 pm in reply to: Casting Studio Set Up

I’ve shot lots of casting sessions for clients. You need to have something like the following:
Sony HXR-NX100 Full HD NXCAM Camcorder with plenty of SD Cards
    Tripod
    Headphones
    LED Lighting
    Boom Microphone
Then either FCPX or Premier Pro Editing System on an iMac
    SD Card Reader

It’s easy to drop your footage from the SD cards into your editing system.

Thanks for your well wishes Tim. I need both!

    I also love Terry’s comment:

“How come those other guys are so much cheaper?”
    Well, “Because they’re worth it.”

I plan on using it too.
