I suggest you buy the book “Cover Letters That Knock ‘Em Dead”
by Martin John Yate

This book helped me a great deal while I looked for my first video position. I’ve u.sed it’s samples many times since. They key to remember is that your letter is there to get them to read your resume. It’s like a 30 second ad spot. Also, consider that your resume should be short and to the point, leaving you something to expand on during an interview. Hope that helps. Best wishes.

Thanks John… I have i So what you’re saying is copy bins program and projects, save them on firewire drive then open them in media 100sw? Then when done import that file to media 100i and output to tape? Will there be any dropped frames? any other issues?

Thanks you two. Not the info I hoped for. Any advice on how to keep editing on my media 100 yet be able to work while away from my suite. My client has FCP. I’d love to be able to work on my shows when I’m there babysitting their facility. That’s why I’m considering a Powerbook. Any other advice? Thanks again.

Hi Barry-

just a thought … buying good video equipment does not make a good shooter, editor, director or end product. Just because you can aim a camera and use a computer doesn’t mean you know how to frame a shot or produce a visually compelling program.

That’s like me saying that I’m going to buy the worlds best gourmet oven, because my boss wants me to create a gourmet meal for his family reunion. I have an oven…I know what tastes good…I’m even familiar with how ovens work, having used one everyday for my own dinner. Should I cook for the boss? Do you think I’ll keep my job?

Or how about I have paint and a brush. I’m going to paint a portrait of my boss for the company lobby. Hey….I’ll buy an expensive easel!! I’ve painted before…(my living room). What do you think…shall I paint that portrait? I think you get my point. I won’t use the brain surgeon analogy….

Learn slowly…watch professionals work….get educated…then move ahead.

Thanks Floh. I only have OSX 10.2.8 on my Mac so I can’t use media100SW. Can you tell me how to create a letterbox mask as an alpha channel using my digital juice background. Thanks.

By the way, I’ve been afraid to install Panther on my system, because it works flawlessly. I fear I’ll have to reinstall everything, and risk losing drivers for my scsi drives etc. Is that a realistic fear? Or would it be totally seamless?

Not sure…But my video looks great on the DVD recorder. It takes 19 minutes to record and finalize a 15 minute show. The funny thing is a 2 minute show will also take about 19 minutes. Weird…

Thanks for the feedback. The “barely supporting myself” comment was in response to one answer here that said just hire another employee. My question was really how others here made the switch…when did they know they could do it? Obviously working as a one man shop is one thing, but thereal money is in expanding your business. Any advice there?

BTW there’s nothing wrong with my self-esteem, but the business can certainly have it’s peaks and valleys of activity.
