    Hi Joe,

Keylight is the plug-in that comes with After Effects and works well for most keying jobs.

If you need something more I really like Ultimatte, but Primatte works well too. Depending on your budget it’s probably worth just sticking with Keylight.

    James,

Simple, just take the pen tool and draw the shape that you need around the footage. Animate the mask path if the footage moves.

For the doorway you could probably even use the rectangle tool, which will draw the sharp corners (you can change the degree of sharpness) and keep the correct 90 degree angles for you.

    Hi Andrew,

Use one Hold Keyframe instead of two identical keyframes. This sort of thing is exactly what they’re made for.

I would check out books and articles on color correction.

Something else that may help is this tutorial that I created a while back:

    Hello again Dotan,

In the Comp window, under the same menu you choose to enable OpenGL preferences choose Fast Preview Preferences. Click on OpenGL Info, this will show you what your card supports and doesn’t support.

I will also add that the nVidia Quadro line of cards work much more smoothly with OpenGL than the GeForce line…so if you can switch like you say you can, it may or may not be worth a shot.

Again though, OpenGL is really only meant for 3D in After Effects, and it doesn’t always do a great job on that.

OpenGL has very few good uses in After Effects. With the exception of working in 3D (and even this isn’t always smooth), you’d be better just turning it off altogether.

  • Hi Chris,

For this I use Color Key. Increase the tolerance, add a little edge thin, and a slight feather.

And, as Ben said, if the flower has black in it, you need to mask the inside part out.
