It all depends what you want from a deck. If you need a firewire feeder deck the DSR-11 is practically perfect, but if you need more, like nice big timecode display the DSR-25 is excellent. Move to the 45 and you loose a superb feature of both the 11 and 25, and that’s the PAL / NTSC switch. I use a DSR-25 and it’s great.

Thanks. Film Effects works great on HDV footage and does indeed look better than the inbuilt CF24 effect. Also, Standards Conversion to 24p works great if you want to edit in a 23.98fps timeline. The gamma curves that come with Film Effects do wonderful things to video footage, and help bring out the richness of film. Try the free demo and see.

Giving AJA their due, it does tell you all this in the fine print in their pdf, but yes indeed, it’s a touch of marketing hype. But as hype goes, it’s not too serious.

The bad news about the HVRM10U is that it’s just a camcorder mechanism. Indeed, you’d be far better off buying a Z1 as then you get an HDV deck and camera for less than the deck.

It’s not “accellerated” by the Kona2. The Kona2 just scales up the video from 960×720 to 1280×720 (or 1280×1080 to 1920×1080), which in my book is not “accelleration”, but final scaling of the video before it gets converted to uncompressed for transfer over SDI. The Decklink HD cards do exactly the same, but again, I’d not call it accelleration.

If you have enough render time, you could use a plugin like Twixtor to try and convert it back to 60i, but it will be very slow and might not work best. Worth a shot though.

“All practical HD cameras record compressed…” Sure, you can use D6, but that tape deck aint on the camera, aint portable and aint practical 🙂 But I’m sure the picture would look lovely….

30p is a sort of poor man’s film look. It is jerky if you shoot it badly with too wild movements in the camera, and really, there’s nothing you can do about it.
