Make sure tha anamorphic flag is set on the properties of the movie or clip before bringing it into the 4:3 timeline.

Put your anamorphic video or timeline into a normal 4:3 timeline sequence and FCP will shrink it to fit, effectively letterboxing it for you.

If you’re shooting DV, the DV deck or camera can translate the video from FCP to analogue for output to your monitor.
Other options for more exotic workflows include:
Decklink cards, availabel from SD through to HD, and their multibridge extreme for PCIe macs.
AJA IO devices which work on the firewire buss and translate SD video between analogue and digital
AJA Kona cards, available for PCI and PCIe macs, do SD and HD.All the above options are great – there’s not a duffer among them! Bust you’ve got to pick the right one for your needs.

Colour Space is something like REC601 or 709, ie the gamut of displayable colours. Chroma sampling is denoted by the 4:2:2 etc. notation and tells you what the resolution of the chroma components is compared to the resolution of the luma. Two different things. And DV50 is quite nice indeed for an SD format…. If you look at example of Noah’s movie on the Panasonic demo disc, it’s fantastic.

Thanks. From what I understand, Red want a lot of feedback and ideas for the camera. They know that the very best ideas will come from people out there in the field so to speak, not necessarily in internal R&D labs. That’s why they’ve gone out to the internet like this. Jim is posting on CML, DVinfo, DVXuser to elicit response from professionals. That’s why the Creative Cow should have a forum for the Red camera!

http://www.red.com – preliminary website, with a rough outline of concept etc. It sounds like it will be super expensive, but the idea is to make it “affordable”, and that you’d be happy when you hear the price. However, no details yet as they don’t want to say something then dissapoint. They’ll have something (probably not a finished camera) to show at NAB. Some of the specs are riddled with humour, like the chip being called “mysterium” as that’s top secret and they don’t want to reveal their chip source etc, but the basic concept is there. Jim Jannard, president of Oakley is behind Red. He’s a complete camera nut, and owns more cameras than most people have ever seen, never mind used. I can assure you that, contrary to rumour, this is not some kind of joke, and is a real product in development now. HDforIndies.com has more info too for you to read.
