It’s the same on internal scopes? Different on external? I’m not getting what’s happening here.

Is it black level or gamma? What does it look like on the FCP scopes? I think there’s luma shift issues with 10bit codecs – this keeps getting fixed and broken with FCP and quicktime updates.

Shoot 24p NTSC. Speed up 4% to go to PAL. Perfect looking conversion. You can do it in Cinema Tools very quickly with it’s “Conform” option.
I don’t think there’s any quality advantage to shooting PAL, really, not in this case, and a PAL HVX is still in development I think.

I think the HDLink is superb, but I have bother getting the interlace mode to work on mine. BMD can’t seem to duplicate the problem to fix it though.
I’ve only seen the ecinema stuff at NAB, but the image also looked superb. But obviously, their stuff is more pricey.

You can’t blame the monitoring gear for failing broadcast standards when it’s obvious the failings are in the user, not the gear.

HD in itself doesn’t make dealing with world standards easier. You still have the issue of different frame rates- 25 v 29.97. Shooting 24p can help as you can just speed that up to 25p easily, but that’s no good for a music video!

Oh, and plasmas are ghastly. IMHO. Much worse than the LCD displays. A Plasma can make even the nicest uncompressed HD look like HDV….

Apple might not support it, but I do. Stick an affordable HD monitor like the JVC next to the cinema display running off the decklink and the only difference is the higher resolution on the cinema display. Colour wise they’re close enough. Colour wise the LCD is more than good enough. Sure, interlaced is a problem, but if interlaced video is not dead yet, then it surely should be. If you really need to see interlace, get a CRT, or better still a nice big DLP HD projector and let it de-interlace and watch that. Lovely.
When Apple say they don’t support it, they’re refering to their ghastly quality desktop cinema preview mode, which is just that – preview quality only. Going over SDI to a HDLink to the same display produces a vastly superior picture.
