Thanks – sounds like the issue with the Dell is a very different problem again.
I’ve only used the HDLink, not the AJA box, and I like the picture on the HDlink very much, but even though it was my suggestion to BMD to include an interlace mode, I’ve still never managed to get the interlaced mode to work.

Strobe of 1 created an identical effect to using the FCP de-interlacer set to “upper”. You are basically throwing one field away, halving your vertical resolution, producing a fake 30p. Oh, and the FCP de-interlace renders faster too, and is also RT enabled.

The de-interlacer in Film Effects is much better than the in-built one in FCP. It keeps your resolution higher and has more controls to get the look right.

As Michael points out, you CAN rev telecine to 23.98fps. If you can’t, check your settings. You can always just rev telecine to 24.00fps and then conform to 23.98fps too if need be, but you shouldn’t have to do that.

Remember to set field order to “upper” for HDV and you’re all set. Should look wonderful.

You should be using the “reverse telecine” tool, not the “conform” tool in Cinem Tools.

If you have powerpoint on your mac, I’d just use that to save out the individual slides as still images, tiffs probably.
Most power point slides are not designed for video, so when you bring them into FCP, you might need to shrink them down (using the motion tab controls) to keep text within title-safe.
I think you’ll need 3 tracks of video in FCP.
On the bottom track, I’d put a nice background image that compliments the slides.
On the middle track, put the slides, perhaps add dissolves or whatever between them.
On the top track is the speaker. Use the controls in the motion tab in FCP to scale it down, perhaps crop the edges slightly. You might also want to add some kind of border and drop shadow.Graeme

IMHO, a CRT HD monitor is the equivalent of Rose Tinted glasses. It makes everything look nice, even when in reality it isn’t nice. Plasmas, on the other hand, can make even nice video look nasty. LCD, I find to be in the middle – quite neutral actually, but remember, I mostly use my APple 23″ with the HD link to convert SDI to DVI.
You can, however, usually by panning over some trees, get artifacts in HDV that show up even on a CRT – they’re so strong that the “nice looking” CRT can’t mask them.
However, these are not the worst problems…. And DVCproHD and HDCAM have these problems too – it’s the problem of over compression, especially in shadows or “flat” areas of the video, which don’t show up too much until you try to pull detail out of shadows or do certain colour correction operations, when they really show up. It’s really over compression combined with the limits of 8bit video, where the natural dither noise that would hide artifacts is compressed away to leave a blocky mess. All HD formats that are even half affordable have this issue.

Thanks. Great that the BetaSP is now looking as intended.
Film Effects, using the gamma controls, can really spruce up most video.
24pA footage should be in a 23.98fps timeline – that’s not in doubt. If it’s not looking as good as it did in camera, I need more info on it’s capture, what it looks like now etc. Also, I need to know how you’re monitoring the footage. It all adds up.
I can give you a call again tomorrow, (drop me a mail if you need me to call) or we can continue here and everyone can benefit – or chip in with ideas.
