It’s not a deck – it’s a camera without a lens. It’s not a proper deck mechanism, doesn’t take “big” tapes and really, for the price, you’re better off getting a second HDV camera, and then you’ve either got a spare, or b-roll.

I think that by the time the HVX200 is available ther’ll be direct to disc solutions for such situations. No need to go the Z1 HDV route if you can wait a few months. I also suspect that the picture on the 200 will be somewhat better….

Shoot P2, dump to hard drive (or even hard drive while recording) and then archive to optical disc or computer backup tape, which is much cheaper than HD Video tape.

You don’t use P2 like tape, you don’t think of P2 as tape, and you’ve just got to get rid of the tape mentality, just as digital photographers have ditched film. Yes you can’t see the full workflow, and yes, you think it will be too expensive. If you’re out shooting all day, the $20,000+ that a tape deck for the Varicam costs will buy a lot of P2 cards.

Camera is $6k. With two 8GB cards is $10k. I don’t see you ever needing more cards than that, or by the time you do, they’ll be a quater of the price.

Remember that NLE’s would never work – hard drives cost too much, and tape-to-tape linear is what people want and is so much easier and everything like colour correction is real time etc. etc. etc. Tape is as dead as the linear editing system. Just walked around NAB today and didn’t see one linear edit system, but saw lots of non-tape acquisition….

Basically, solid state recording is coming wether you like it or not….

P2 will work on your mac – don’t worry. Support is there in FCP5.

No idea. Apple weren’t set up to do that for me when I went and asked them today. But the conversion filters do so much more than just PAL and NTSC. They do 24p, advanced pulldown conversion etc. etc.

Over firewire it needs to see a device like a firestore that can control things. Firestore is currently not fast enough, but you can bet they’re working on it now. I expect something from someone by the end of the year.

Direct to disk will come, but it’s not ready today. The camera isn’t ready today either. I expect there to be solutions by the end of the year.

I think it does record to any drive with enough data rate for the HD, DV, or DVCpro50.

Audio circuitry is meant to be good – as in as good as the DVX which is meant to be good. The flipout screen is 4:3 so that data can be displayed in the borders – nice idea.

You can press a dub button, and dub your 720p variframe footage to DV tape for DV slomo! Don’t know how this works for fast motion, but that’s what I’m told.

No details on the chips yet – they’re trying to get the best balance between resolution, dynamic range and low light/noise. They’re aiming to be really good on all three parameters.

Apple are showing FCP hooked up to that P2 drive thing with 5 slots.

The camera loks “sturdy”. Should find out more info soon.

    BTW, Jan rocks!

Just got back from the Apple event – P2 + tape. Tape for DV only – DV, DV50 and DV100 on P2. Variable frame rate like Varicam in 720p. $5,995, but didn’t say what came with it in terms of memory P2 chips. 2 P2 slots. Works in FCP5.

I don’t know! I’ve never seen CT do that. I’ve only removed telecine from video files that don’t have any burned in code or anything, so I’ve had to go in by hand and find myself where the A frames are and practically everything by hand. And indeed, that’s my only other suggestion – to take that movie clip into CT by hand, and set up the rev telecine parameters yourself. Other than that I’m stumped.
