  • JAN – Can you confirm the HDD recording?

Posted by Luis Caffesse on April 18, 2005 at 5:08 pm

It was reported last night that the HVX200 will record directly to any FireWire or USB2.0 drive that can sustain the datarate needed. But today people seem to be uncertain about that, and I haven’t seen anything in Panasonic’s literature about that feature.

What I have read is that the HVX allows you to transfer files from P2 cards to any Firewire or USB2.0 drive.

Jan, if you’re out there and have a minute, could you clarify this?
Can the HVX in fact record directly to any firewire/USB drive, or is it only that you can transfer the files after recording to P2?

    Thanks,
and sorry if I caused any confusion last night.
I was only reporting what I thought was a confirmed feature.

I think it does record to any drive with enough data rate for the HD, DV, or DVCpro50.

Audio circuitry is meant to be good – as in as good as the DVX which is meant to be good. The flipout screen is 4:3 so that data can be displayed in the borders – nice idea.

You can press a dub button, and dub your 720p variframe footage to DV tape for DV slomo! Don’t know how this works for fast motion, but that’s what I’m told.

No details on the chips yet – they’re trying to get the best balance between resolution, dynamic range and low light/noise. They’re aiming to be really good on all three parameters.

Apple are showing FCP hooked up to that P2 drive thing with 5 slots.

The camera loks “sturdy”. Should find out more info soon.

    BTW, Jan rocks!

You know what Luis? I’m getting the impression from the guys over at DVX User that Panasonic is kind of sitting on this question. I do a lot of documentary and live performance, so this is a big deal for me too.

Jan, I know there must be a big internal debate in your company about this and I don’t envy your position. But I am responsible for making recommendations to at least three producers here in L.A. and one in Texas over the next few months on moving to budget HD solutions. And to have factual knowledge about whether real direct to disk recording is planned in the first release of the camera is a critical point in my report to them.

Again, nice product! Very cool. We love you for it. We just are trying to be responsible and figure out our workflows before buying.

    Thanks,

    Thanks for the report Graeme!

Keep em coming, and if you get a chance, ask Jan about the HDD recording issue. We have yet to hear from someone at Panasonic on that, and the waters are getting pretty murky over here on what is and what is not confirmed.

    Thanks!

Q4 release date means full specs aren’t set in stone yet perhaps?

Direct to disk will come, but it’s not ready today. The camera isn’t ready today either. I expect there to be solutions by the end of the year.

Over firewire it needs to see a device like a firestore that can control things. Firestore is currently not fast enough, but you can bet they’re working on it now. I expect something from someone by the end of the year.

    Hi,

Have been totally inundated with stuff since I left LV. The 1394 output must see an intelligent device on the other side, like a Firestore device. Please note that Focus Enhancements is a P2 Partner and as such we are working together to find a solution.

There may be others but in the least you could record to your Apple or the Avid.

    Best,

    jan
