I played both the f900 footage and the 5D footage back having “Pro-resed” both to HQ. I hear you, I did try and minimize the detailed parts of the picture, and the 5D only makes up around 3% of the shots in the 52 min show.

Is it possible to record live from the HDMI output in any way..?

That’s what I was looking for. I’ll give it a whirl.

    Thanks

Hmm, yes, been there, done that. We’re looking for something that can turn around in an hour or two. We’ve even considered dumping to an HDV deck via SDI and capturing that onto another machine…

We have to do this with two shows every week, so it a regular headache…

Thanks John, was always too afraid to go that high…

You’re right, I spend a lot of time shooting with a variety of cameras, so I havn’t given the time to get full control of the f900R (yes, all of ours are R’s).

I’m not poo-pooing the unit, I was just horrified to see the results of cheaper formats next to f900’s (albeit poorly engineered…)

I’ll give the higher detail a crack… By the way, do you know of any good tutorials or such that deals with the basics here? We have a lot of guys who use these units that are even more in the dark than myself.

I’ve also had this problem, f900s not giving the detail that we expect from such an expensive camera… We did an interview recently where I had a f900 as the A cam, and used a little Z7 as a tighter, more edgey angle.

The disappointment (horror actually) in post when we saw that the Z1 was MARKEDLY sharper than the f900 caused us to up the detail to -15 from -35.

The reps all tell you to drop to -40 here, and I now see that this is either a remaining figment of the interlacing asthetic, or just a load of rubbish.

We’re getting a EX-1 or two soon, and I’m going to bench these cameras to see what the corresponding detail settings are. I’ll let you know how it goes. Makes one worry when you’re trying to match a f900 with a full range of cheapie cameras…

Too true, we’d be up the creek without FCP. Its a fantastic app. I have a feeling HDV and long GOP is a nightmare to deal with both on a computing and personal level!

Then again, in most instances, that goodness for HDV.

    Thanks for the responses Marc.

That figures… The interesting thing is though, I did a test on a different computer, also a dual Intel mac that was running FCP 6 and the same thing happened.

Hmmm, this has quite sinister undertones for the future of long GOP and FCP, what will happen to the XDcam HD flavours that everyone is holding out for? Doesn’t bode well does it.

In the meantime I’m using Quicktime, fortunately I only use HDV for one little “piece to camera” to intro a full HD sequence, but its a bigger hassle than exporting the entire DVCProHD timeline that I spend all day working on…

Thanks for your help, maybe someone from Apple may read this one day.
