The “blindingly obvious” solution is to get a monitor for your client to use. Buy a tv if you can’t afford a professional broadcast monitor and hook it up for the client, using an I/O device of your choice. Audio can come from the TV at that point if needed.

Getting the client to sit in front of your laptop for playback is not really a great way to treat your client. If he wants to pause and check something, what are you going to do… say “sure, just scoot over a bit and let me sit there.”

At the very least, you sit in front of the laptop, and give the client your secondary monitor set to full screen mode. You should always be sitting at the controls. In this scenario, you should be able to plug speakers directly from your laptop and place them by the client.

I’v done road presentations this way for offline. Me with my laptop, a second computer screen set to full screen playback for the client, and a cheap pair of speakers to amplify for the room.

That is weird…especially with the stills. I would have assumed it had something to do with the original media and how it was being interpreted in Avid, but with Stills playing 3x faster…and exporting properly…?

Have you tried creating a new project?
Is this the only project that does it?
What is your source material vs your sequence specs. (i know the stills did it too, but…)
Linking to clips instead of importing. (don’t know why…but why not)

I’ve had weird timecode display happen in 720 59.94 projects before, but it was just displays..not actual playback speed.

If you would like to post your project and one of the clips/mediafiles, i’d be happy to see how it plays on my system.
Trying it on a totally different box might be your best option right now to see if it persists.

Strange…stuck key? You know if you hit “L” more than once it will speed up playback?…the mouse jog button is activated and the mouse is triggering it forward?

When playing at fast speed, what does the playback indicator say on the source/record window? If Avid is trying to play at 2x or 3x speed, it will say so in the play icon.

I recently had an issue with another program where my Wacom pen was resting on the tablet while I used the mouse, and that screwed up that program royally…havent’ seen that behaviour in Avid, but could be a conflict with another input device.

Try creating a new user and see if it persists.

  • Just spit ballin…I wonder if you could unlink the clips from the media, modify the clips to be 5 channel audio clips and then relink to the audio recordings? I’ve done it the other way, where I import media from a camera with 8 audio channels, but only two of them have audio, so I’ve modified the clips to only have two audio channels and re linked to the media.

The other method would be to build a macro to do the heavy lifting for you. I have macros on my Avid Control surface and on my old G13 that would swap out audio on a clip by clip basis with the push of one button. Takes a bit to build, but it is definitely doable. for mine it was set to mark a clips inpoint, go to inpoint, match frame, adjust track patching on the timeline and perform an overwrite edit. (a bit simplified, but that was the basis) I used this to go back through a program and add in all the ambience tracks after the edit was done.

I hadn’t tried it, but in theory your macro could also do a “step forward 1 frame” to hit the next clip, and “repeat”, so essentially the press of 1 button could do the entire timeline. For mine, I simply clicked on a clip, hit the macro, clicked on the next clip, hit the macro…you can go through a good sized timeline pretty quickly.

Depending on your sequence layout you could do this on the existing timeline, or create a duplicate, build a timeline of only the 5 channel audio, and then cut that into your existing timeline.

  • Don’t blame Resolve…blame Premiere. I have very few problems with mixed frame rates out of Avid to Resolve, but Premiere and FCP (7) could never do it properly as they don’t do the conversion properly (or track it properly) in their own software, so the list they output is incorrect.

You might not be getting realtime playback. As you manipulate the clip, and add more items to the timeline, you are asking the box to do more and more in realtime.

If you turn off the video track, does your audio clear up?

Have you tried and output to file and checked that file?

    +1

I’ve been asking BM to buy Avid for a while.

I don’t think they aren’t included, but if you have a project started on studio, with plugins, and then open it on a free version, you will get the watermark on those clips.

Shane, your conversion method makes me think that perhaps you work at my bank!
