Had this problem earlier today. I’m editing with content off a hard drive. I closed down my anti-virus software and the timeline plays with no issue now.
May have just lucked out, but as soon as I did this I noticed the problem was rectified.
I use 360 Total Security, which at times can be a little invasive with some tasks. Hope this helps.
