Yep, that’s a great read and very helpful.

This NTSC/PAL thing is a bit of a distraction. I’ve been working on this animated music video for three-plus years and focusing mainly on DV vs. HD, and making sure the file I output is correct for Adobe Encore, and to have all this come up right at the end (I’m delivering it in Dec.) is not something I want to be spending time on!

Hi Eric, thanks for your reply. I have one other question because the dvd I’m authoring is a music video. I read somewhere here on a CC blog that playing an NTSC disc on a PAL player, the timing can change, i.e., the music will keep its pitch, but the play speed may not be correct. Can you tell me anything about this possibility?

I have a similar question: I’m in New York, and currently authoring a DVD that needs to play in Singapore. I’ve told the client that it will absolutely play on DVD players in Singapore but I’m still trying to confirm the best way to go about it. I did read the other day that NTSC content will play on most PAL players, and I see it repeated here, except for Michael’s post. Is there a definitive answer?

  • I just built a similar project. there are six segments of animation that we wanted to view either as separate sections, or watch all segments strung together in one show.

So I imported the six animations, each with its own timeline, and gave each one a menu button.

I then had a “Play all” button and created a new timeline that had all six segments play in sequence. so there’s only one of each animitions on the disc, used in more than one timeline. It worked fine.

However I haven’t experimented with chapter headings or using them to trigger navigation.

It *sounds* like you’re overlooking something simple. Are each of your clips on its own timeline? Have you set an end action for each one?

Hard to diagnose without more info, and I’m on v2.0 so maybe something has changed.

Nope, I don’t think there’s a way to force it to. Believe me, I tried! Your pixel size is good; you should check the frame rate. For NTSC it needs to be 29.97, 23.976, 23.978, or 24 fps.

And it won’t accept 30 fps as a substitute for 29.97. Just won’t.

P.S. check your pixel size. Your subject line says 702×480 and your post says 704×480. Make sure which it is.

Encore is pretty fussy when it comes to video specs. I don’t think it will accept any other resolution than what is specified in the help files: 720×480 and 720×486 for NTSC, and 720×576 and 704×576 for PAL.

Since Encore is built for DVD authoring, it appears to be locked into TV play specs. As far as I know, but I am a newbie.

Yeah, it was driving me crazy trying to solve it, but then figured a workaround, so it’s dealt with, but I never could figure out the blinking.

Iann – I’m just thinking out loud as I’m a newbie with Encore. Is it possible you have conflicting end actions for timelines if they’re also in playlists? I don’t know if there’s an automatic override in this situation where one is selected over another.

Another thing to look into (since you’re having different behavior between a pc and tv viewing) is this page, https://dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html . It has everything you want to know about dvd’s.

Thanks for your comment Joe. I’ve solved that problem but somehow created another: Now when I set a loop point in the animated menu, the buttons blink, which is NOT my intention! the speed of the blinking seems to be determined by the length of the looping segment at the end.

The animated menu is 00;00;08;01. I set the duration for the full length. I set the loop point anywhere from 00;00;06;13 onward, but no matter where I set it, the buttons blink. Short blink if the loop is short, longer if the loop is longer. But the blinking shouldn’t be happening at all.

the blinking doesn’t happen in the preview panel, only when I burn a disk.
