January 6, 2006 at 3:09 am in reply to: SLO MO (60p) straight from camera by SDI possible?Decklink HD cards do capture Varicam and the recognise the tagged frames.
But, FCP has a problem while you are ingesting the off-speed shots.
If you MARK IN/MARK OUT, FCP assumes this is the duration of the final clip – after it has been slowed down!
For example, if you are shooting 50fps for half speed slo-motion, (I am in 50Hz country), then you need to MARK IN/MARK OUT double the duration you require, e.g. you want 10 secs of slo-motion (shoot 500 frames), you have to tell FCP to capture 20secs of material!
What some people do is to record 15 mins approx on a 32 minute tape, and record black for the rest of the tape. Then ingest the whole tape to FCP via Capture card in one go.
In 50z world the FCP FRC plug-in does not work. The FRC plug-in only works in 23.98/59.94.
Alternatively us the Panasonic Frame Rate Converter Box.Gerry Brooks

[paul boyer] “1. How do I determine the length of tape in this 720p format? The same 126 that gives me 32 mins in camera will give me over an hour from the 1200a. Is there a list of these times? Am I doing something horribly wrong?”
In the Varicam, DVCPRO-HD recording is 18micron track pitch. The linear tape speed is 4 x DVCPRO. Thus you get 32 mins in HD recording.
In the 1200A you have a choice of 18 micron recording or 9 micron (SP or LP). The factory default is 9 micron setting (LP). Thus you get 64 mins recording in DVCPRO-HD. AJ-HD1700 Studio VTR is the same. A 9 micron recording from a 1200A VTR won’t play in the Varicam, but a Varicam tape will play in the 1200A. (Also watch out for the earlier HD150 deck, it is only 18 micron recording.)Gerry Brooks

Just an omission. PAL units will do the same as the NTSC cameras only in 25p and PAL.

December 6, 2005 at 12:20 am in reply to: Extracting variable frame rates with the 1200A[gary adcock] “As others have said FCP can do this with a free plug in – but only in DVCPROHD content shot at 59.94 –not with content shot at the EU standard of 60hz or anything that is an uncompressed capture.
For those issues, currently only the AJA Kona boards (K2 and LH/e models) and the AJ-FRC27 can handle the capture of “even” frame content of 24.0 ,25.0 etc. from a varicam set at 60hz. The Kona boards also allow for the real time capture of the offspeed footage as 8 or 10bit Uncompressed into Final Cut.”
What about the Black Magic HD card?

In Australia, we have just started to test P2 cards and FCP5. Bit early yet for results.

They are “flickering” at 50Hz. If the TV set is running at 60Hz, there is a 10Hz “beat”. Very visible!
