About the macmini cluster + G4 cube…
[IMG]https://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b236/livingfortoday2/minicube.jpg%5B/IMG%5D
You could fit like 4 MacMini 2011 in there..chain them up with thunderbolt and you have a 16-core CPU beast, with 65 GB of RAM. And 8TB of HDD. Just saying it could be done, prettily today.hehehe

I do wish people would do a bit more research before calling people crazy.
A 64bit ARM design exists. And it will challenge xeon level processors. And HP has announced plans to use it on its next server grade products. Google Project Moonshot.
Heres a link bud. https://www.engadget.com/2011/11/02/hp-and-calxedas-moonshot-arm-servers-will-bring-all-the-boys-to/.

I like the macmini cluster idea, and I think it makes sense to further streamline Apples product line..but wishful thingking-wise…I wish they just bring back the most beautiful computer ever made next to the iMac G4…the G4 Cube.
Theoretically, I say, design their own 64-bit ARM chip, place in some 48-core version on a cube, that will take like 5% of the space inside. The 95% of the space left will be for a 512GB SSD, 2 GPUs,PSU and a fan.
There, the new pro level Mac Pro. The only ports youll see below are 6 thunderbolt ports, 2 of them optical.

[David Roth Weiss] “Forgetting about proper color, which is highly subjective, how about fields-related issues, which involve no subjectivity?
How exactly can you properly QC the output of FCPX without being able to see mismatched fields or reversed field order, both of which require proper video monitoring?”
FCPX -> FCPXML -> DaVinci Resolve . Does this doesnt solve that? And if the argument is its not thru FCPX-only, does anyone here actually cc with Premiere Prto’s built in color corrector? Or AVIDs? Or any other major NLE(are there others)? I do believe if your really serious about color correction, and your’re in a big budget production house for movies or broadcast you would have to use a third party software for it. Which just has been solve with Resolves playing nice with FCPXML. On which you can color correct..on a proper monitor..so….

[David Roth Weiss] “As you say Bill, every module will connect via T-bolt, and we’ll all be happy campers with a lot fewer fans, a lot fewer cables, and the entire footprint of a highest-end digital editing system will be lots of tiny boxes connected to some big beautiful monitors that all be plug and play and color managed.”
Oh the future looks great. It is a given fact that an external GPU can be connected thru thunderbolt. So all these woes about raw power can be put to rest. Apple just made the tower obsolete.

I read somewhere how Apple is unique in its ways that they are actually happy when an older product of them gets cannibalized by a new one. Like how the iPad is cannibalizing the Mac, and the iPhone cannibalizing the iPod. Just as Steve told in his Stanford speech, that “death is the greatest invention of life. For it eliminates the old, to make way for the new. ”
I think the mental process going on with FCPX is to be as future proof as possible. To leave old standards or languages or workflow behind and completely design a new NLE from the ground up prioritizing the new and emerging technologies that will come. To reel in the ever increasing users of all digital workflow and independent production.
They choose to have this market and in a way, they are also leaving all the people who are so held up in their old ways and are not anymore capable of learning anything new behind. THEY ARE SACRIFICING THE OLD, TO MAKE WAY FOR THE NEW. They’re giving that small group up to Adobe, Avid..cause they know eventually when those people die and their younger new gen execs take their place, they will switch back to the future prooof NLE that is FCPX anyway. And dont even think it will require a whole new hardware overhaul cause it wont. FCPX is designed to be as processor efficient as possible so that even laptops can run it well.

Modularity has been Apple’s philosophical mantra ever since jobs dreamed about how computer will work. iOS is a great example of modal computing and is Job’s ultimate OS dream. It is definitely the future. But I think you need to get out more Bill, if FCPX is what you think about before you sleep, you have some social issues to attend to.;)

Thanks for these real world experience sharing Jim. And having taking the higher road politely responding to that noisy dude on the internet.
Cristian, how much time have you spent actually using FCPX, NOT reading about it. Cause you know, there is a huge difference between the two, “using” and “reading”.

[David Cherniack] “There’s another point to consider: at this time there’s no guarantee that FCPx will be around in a couple of years.”
But Apple, with their billions of dollars in profit is the most stable company with an NLE than any other company that exists.its competition are only millionaires. A slight change of hand, lost sales, marketing palugue, hack can easily put them out of business. But with Apple, the most valuable company in the world, its pretty hard. So in this regard, you can feel more secure that this company is the more reliable option.
Yes massive changes were made, but have’nt we learned anything the past decade?! This is Apple. That’s their thing. They make things infinitely better, they do things right. Sometrimes they do it so fast that we are initially caught stunned for some period but eventually realize that its the most awesome thing ever. It happend over and over again from the iMac G3, the iPod, iTunes, iPhone, iPad…Everybody cried foul and doomed it to fail but meh, it ruled the world. Do you really think FCPX is any different.
Next year the two last requirement for full broadcast integration will be fixed, third party APIs will have completed the plug-ins. FCPX will have been faster and more stable, and every other editor who have just invested thousands into other “traditional” NLEs will look in envy as the el-cheapo guys, kool aid drinkers, Apple sheeps makes awesome stuff on their macbook airs on coffee shops on breaks, docking it into their thunderbolt monitors daisy chained to TB raids and accessing centralized data thru iCloud.
This is the future, It would be fit if you prepare your students for it.

“I’m sure there’s a good reason for this but as time continues to slip by I really can’t for the life of me see what that reason could be.
“Their giving business to their software partners. Its how you snag in more developers and support to your platform, give business partners holes to fill.
