Yes, as in most all internet forums, you cannot post copyright material unless you hold the copyright. I thought the material you were working on was your personal DVD, or a friends, until your more recent post. As I rerread your thread there are some slight references that I did not pick up on.

Start Vegas and load the .veg file. When Vegas cannot find the still image ‘HD.jpg’, it will prompt with several options. Select the 2nd option from the top “Specify a new location or replacement file”. Then navigate to the folder you have the still comparison that you posted here and select it. It will then prompt for the ‘SD.jpg’, and again select the 2nd option from the top “Specify a new location or replacement file”. Then navigate to the folder you have the still comparison that you posted here and select it.

I used the still image you posted with two copies, one named HD.jpg and the other SD.jpg.

Programs and FX’s we commonly have available will not and cannot turn SD resolution into HD resolution and gain the same sharpness of detail. For that it requires a very expensive restoration program tools that run on huge workstation computers and the charge for such a service is cost prohibited for most folks.

Well, the sky is pretty much the limit as to how many and how much change you can make. Watch the tutorials, and apply the image FX’s sparingly. It doesn’t make much difference what the original looks like as long as you are happy with the look of the end results. It’s more difficult to color correct and color grade a poor image, as you are starting with in either of your samples, but I’m sure you will come out with something much better. Here is the link to the Vegas Pro 15 .veg file I used. Put the screenshots you previous posted in the same folder and load it up. Track #2 contains the FX’s applied. Again, they are not the only ones you can use, nor are they all needed to get the look you want. Some are even fighting each other.

I would start first by turning them off one at a time to see the effect. Then you can change the settings in any of them to see the effect. Hope this helps.

Really at this point it’s not necessary to post the png images.

I either do not know how you got the HD version, or it is so far back in this thread I have lost track. So, with that said, you may want to consider placing your color correction and color grade to the SD version and then use the Vegas Pro Smart Upscale Fx to render it to HD (maybe just some short cuts, so the render doesn’t take long to see the result). There are a few different ways to cook the steak!!!

Hi Carlos,

I used the .jpg screenshots you already provided. The adjustments I made are over-cooked, but I wanted to show how things can get changed. If you are interested, I can upload the .veg file so you can load it and play with the various FX’s and dial them back to something you may like. Of course you may not like the changes at all and that is OK, it’s the look you want that is important.

As I wasn’t there during the shoot, I have no idea what the water really looked like, or how you would like it to look. Likewise I don’t know the skin tone of these kids, how much sun they got this day, or whether if this was salt water or fresh water, and how that may have changed their complexion. Same with their hair color.

I used more FX’s on this than what is really needed, but again to show the effect of the ones I selected.

Hi Carlos,

I have to leave shortly and will not be able to work on this today. In the mean time, if you can save those Vegas snapshot in .png format it would be better than .jpg. In the windows that pops up when you click on ‘Save Snapshot’ at the bottom ‘Save as type’ you can change from the default of .jpg to .png.

Also, when you reply to this post use the little disc icon listed just below ‘Message:’ (all way to the right) which is ‘FILE UPLOAD’. Thank You. I will take a look at your sample later today or tomorrow, or perhaps another member will contribute with some color correction suggestions.

I copy and pasted this from my 3rd reply in this thread…..

“If you don’t have 2 monitors, you can display the difference in a split screen display using Track Motion. Drag a sample clip from the Project Media bin to track 1. Then drag that same clip to track 2, and align it below track1. Press the Mute icon on the video track 2.

Click on the Track Motion icon in the track header of track 1. Move the screen alignment of the event in track1 to the left so only half of it shows in the preview window, the right half will be black/blank. Now click on the Mute icon in the track 2 header to unmute track 2. Now you see track 1 on the left and track 2 on the right.

Apply your magic to the event/clip in track 2.

When you go full screen you will see the before on the left and the after on the right.”

You will also see the before and after in the Preview window, just easy to detect the difference in Full Screen.

Hi Michael,

Seems I have read your post in another thread somewhere, so this might not be what you want.

I load a clip in the timeline and use the timeline viewer. In Windows, Alt+Mouse Scroll Wheel, will expand the clip, so the mouse movement of the play head in timeline viewer is in smaller increments. Then right/left arrow keys will advance 1 frame at a time for the very fine cut placement.

Hi Carlos,

In reference to number 2, as I posted previously, I would prepare a split screen to compare the SD to the HD. Then anything you do to improve the HD you can see side-by-side to the SD.

I use all the scopes, but primarily the Histogram, RGB Parade and Waveform. You have a lot of tools to choose from, you can apply the Black and White filters and make adjustments, the White Balance tool, the Curves, Color Corrector and Secondary Color Corrector. As you know, a little bit of adjustment goes a long way.

If you have PhotoShop or Affinity Photo, could grab a screenshot from your HD and take that into PhotoShop, make the corrections there, save the corrections as LUT, then apply that LUT to your HD footage in Vegas Pro 15. After applying the LUT in Vegas you may have some minor corrections to make, but after creating the LUT, it may save you time if you have various HD clips with the same issues.

Another thing you may want to consider is take a screen grab (png format) of a sample frame (same frame) of the SD and HD and post it here. Other members may be willing to spend some time to make some corrections and provide you with the settings. Having them both would allow others to see the difference and the SD would be their target.

Did you create proxies for all these videos, and are you preview with quality set at ‘Preview’ or ‘Draft’? If, so they should preview smoother. Of course how smooth depends on any FX’s or filters you may be applying.
