    It seems that it is not a video format issue but the actual issue is the trimmer. When I drag the video icon to the trimmer window or select “open in trimmer” and move any of the yellow in and out points, it triggers the “this software stopped working” pop-up to display thereby crashing the whole system.

    We just purchased Sony Vegas 12 and here’s my experience:

    1) Imported an (.avi) but it prompted a message that displayed I didn’t have the codecs for it;
    2) Imported an (.mp4) a screencast outputted from screencast-o-matic and it imported than when tried to trim it in the trimmer, it crashed the system “Vegas stopped working.”
    3) Took this same (.mp4) and converted it into a (.wmv)using FreeMake video converter; again it imported fine but crashed in the trimmer.

    The last time I used Sony Vegas it was “Sony Vegas 6” and I remember having to install all the codecs although our IS department said when they installed it, it never prompted for any necessary codecs to be installed. I cannot find any information in the manual or anywhere whether codecs need to be installed or not. What’s the best file format to use for video compositing and eventually authoring out to DVD architect? Is it best practice to work with a standard file format and will I need to install the specific codec once I find one that works? What do you suggest?

    Thanks.
