I am looking to purchase Sony Vegas 12 and i have been doing research.

I found this article regarding .flv

Compatibility with a wider range of Video Formats – Another big request for Sony Vegas Pro 12, which has been a problem in previous versions of Sony Vegas, is for better compatibility with a wider range of video formats such as .mp4, .flv, .mkv and more! Sony Vegas has always been notorious for having problems with certain video formats. For example, Vegas would refuse to open/import a certain video file if it was .mp4 format. Also, with certain formats, Vegas has trouble reading the audio of the video clip or it fails to sync the video and audio correctly.

Now from past usages of Sony Vegas in school and at friends houses, the software never worked with .flv.
I downloaded the trial and it didn’t seem to work but will the full version be able to?

    thanks
    Vaughn

No it will not, .flv is not an editing format.
And you have your facts totally incorrect, in regards
to your statement of Vegas having a lack of compatibility
with a wide range of video formats.

Do yourself a favor and DO NOT buy it. Let them work out the bugs. I have installed it 5 times. It has crashed my video card (SV11 never did that); it will not play the video preview (but will play in remote screen); has crashed repeatedly using New Blue FX.

In a word – it’s total Bush league. Right now I’m reinstalling SV11.

Which Vegas 12 bugs are you speaking of Charles?

Steve – I think I was pretty explicit. SV12 has crashed my video card several times (SV11 never did that). NewBlue crashes everytime. And now several times the video preview screen shows either a black, white or frozen screen – however, choosing “remote screen icon” allows the view preview to play full screen on a separate monitor correctly.

Ok Fine, stick with the tool that works for you.
And as an added note, Newblue is NOT a product
of Sony Vegas whatsoever. It has issues and i dont use it.

Sorry – didn’t mean come down on you – just frustrated. The worst part is the crashing of the video preview screen.

That is too bad Charles. I’m with Steve, for me V12 has been solid as a rock. My video card is a Quadro 4000 by Nvidia. It had an issue a few updates back, but none lately.

We just purchased Sony Vegas 12 and here’s my experience:

    1) Imported an (.avi) but it prompted a message that displayed I didn’t have the codecs for it;
    2) Imported an (.mp4) a screencast outputted from screencast-o-matic and it imported than when tried to trim it in the trimmer, it crashed the system “Vegas stopped working.”
    3) Took this same (.mp4) and converted it into a (.wmv)using FreeMake video converter; again it imported fine but crashed in the trimmer.

The last time I used Sony Vegas it was “Sony Vegas 6” and I remember having to install all the codecs although our IS department said when they installed it, it never prompted for any necessary codecs to be installed. I cannot find any information in the manual or anywhere whether codecs need to be installed or not. What’s the best file format to use for video compositing and eventually authoring out to DVD architect? Is it best practice to work with a standard file format and will I need to install the specific codec once I find one that works? What do you suggest?

    Thanks.

It seems that it is not a video format issue but the actual issue is the trimmer. When I drag the video icon to the trimmer window or select “open in trimmer” and move any of the yellow in and out points, it triggers the “this software stopped working” pop-up to display thereby crashing the whole system.
