Yep, sure is. I didn’t expect they were going to move to PCI-e only. That isn’t something you find on the PC side because of the issues with legacy cards. I was already to plunk down the money to buy one of these systems but now I am asking which HD capture card and RAID adapter I would buy right now. Does anybody know of any PCI-e RAID announcements?

I am certainly not bashing the Deckink cards. In fact I am looking hard at the Multibridge Studio very hard for a PC based system I am getting soon.

I didn’t realize the Decklink cards did that scaling in hardware the way the AJA cards do? Have the guys at BMD documented that? It would be interesting to see if it hardware scaling allow older G5’s to handle more streams of video. For now I just look at it as a bonus feature.

There are enough pros who are satisfied with both to make you feel comfortable no matter which way you go. One factor that is swaying me towards the Kona is the release of the new KonaLH. It’s the cheapest card by far with HD analog I/O. It also looks like you have a slightly older G5 and the Kona cards accelerate DVCProHD and HDV scaling. That might make a difference for you on the editing side. Just a thought.

Are you talking about new 9550SX line? They are quoting some amazing RAID 5 and RAID 0 speeds. What kind of rates are you guys seeing? Have you tested the 12 and 16 port cards? Thanks for any info you can pass on!

I am totally cross platform and work on Windows, Linux, OSX, and other Unix variants but I wish more of these companies would support OSX. I don’t know if these RAID OEMs realize how much demand there is for a SATA RAID solution from a mature vendor on OSX.

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for your response. I am buying this from an Apple authorized dealer and I know I could supply my receipt after I buy it. I am planning to uy Apple Care to make sure I have some protection since the model is a store display. I was just hoping that with the purchase of a new Apple Care contract they would know for sure that it was a new purchase.

Hi Olivier,
From the way it was explained to me at least part the acceleration has to to do with the scaling math for upconverting the HDV to a full 1920/1080i frame for Final Cut. Instead of using the CPU to do this scaling the Kona cards are supposed do all the math using onboard hardware. This is supposed to leave more CPU cycle available real time effects or for other apps. The Kona cards are supposed to offload this math in a similar way for DVCProHD, and RT Extreme.
