The exact same issue as you describe it here is occurring with me. I have never had this issue with any other version of Vegas. Someone mentioned to disable CPU rendering but I don’t believe that is an option with the mpeg 2 rendering templates. Please correct me if I am wrong and demonstrate. I am using 12 build 726 and it is skipping frames randomly in the render output. BTW. Sony has about the worse tech support service I have ever experienced. My dog knows more about their products then their so called tech support people do. This problem is occurring on my state of the art $5000 dedicated quadcore editing station. The same exact file rendered on my $800 Dell laptop with the same build of Vegas has no mpeg 2 skipping issues with the rendered file. That is why I believe you may be on to something when someone said it might have to do with the CPU or other rendering settings that a more advanced machine would be able to access. I have to deliver mpeg 2 files every single day to clients so this is a fricking nightmare.
Update: Since posting this problem I believe I have discovered that the problem is not with the render but with the windows media player installed on my production computer. If I play the file back that was skipping on the production machine in windows media player it does not have the same skipping glitches when played back on another machine such as my laptop in power DVD or another playback program that can properly decode mpeg 2 files. So the issue no surprise here is with the support or should I say lack of support windows media player provides for mpeg2 playback. In the past I have installed 3rd party codecs to deal with this issue but I have often had mixed results and also am not a fan of the lack of control you have over being able to control which codec is used to encode files once you install those 3rd party packages. Anyway perhaps this will help someone else resolve this issue if they experience it.

Just to add one final piece to this I installed Vegas 8 32 bit to the machine that has the issue with producing Windows Media Player playable MPEG 1 files in Vegas Pro 11 and those MPEG 1 files play fine which taken with all the other steps i have documented here leaves me to conclude that this is probably a bug or compatibility issue with Vegas Pro 11 or perhaps more specifically the 64 bit version and not Windows Media Player.

I agree, think its a problem related to the WMA codec installation:
Here is a list of steps in addition to the ones previously documented I have taken to try and isolate what may be causing the problem:
1) Uninstalled and reinstalled WMA 12
2) Tested the file on the same version release WMA on a different windows 7 computer
3) Tried rendering the MPEG 1 file without a audio stream to see if I might Isolate the render issue to the Video or Audio stream. If it played back properly without an audio stream it might indicate a file conflict with the sound card driver. Some sound cards, especially professional ones don’t always support very low bit audio streams like you often see in a MPEG 1 file.Still to do>>> sent the file to a available replica build of the computer I am having trouble playing the file on.

wish I could make it go away but in the legal videography business it is still the required format for many of the industry litigation software packages. the biggest of which and most widely used is livenote and case notebook.
we encode video to sync with digital versions of court reporters transcripts so that users can advance video to persise points in the written text which is all indexed and presented side by side with the video. the one thing good about it is because of the small file size it renders really quick. thats a good thing when you are dealing with 30 hours of snooze testimony video and you would like the workflow to be as quick as possible.

ok thanks for giving it a try. I may have to carefully consider if adding a specific codec will resolve this hopefully without compromising the quality of the included vegas codecs. I wonder if its possible to just add a specific single codec, say just a version of MPEG 1 in addition to the included Main concept version? When you look at the various Vegas rendering templates you see many different codecs which output the same encoding formats living side by side. For instance their are more than one version of MPEG 4 you can encode to. Is there something I am missing or not understanding? Would it not be true that adding a additional codec would cause no harm to the quality of the existing Vegas on board codecs as long as you are not replacing them?
