ok this one is very strange. I can render a dv clip in Vegas 8 using the standard mpeg 1 template and the playback is fine in windows media player 11. take the same exact clip use the same exact verbatim mpeg1 settings and render it in Vegas pro 11 and windows media player wont play the file and throws a generic cant play the file error message. my first thought would be a codec encoding difference between the versions . not sure how to tell if the two versions use different mpeg1 codecs for encoding. heck this might not even be the issue. I also am wondering if it might be a windows media player issue but to disprove that I as I said I can play a Mpeg 1 file which was rendered in Vegas 8 no problem. unfortunately I have to use mpeg 1 renders for several programs my clients use in the legal industry or I would not even be bothering with this.
Any ideas? Any one else had this issue? can anyone recreate this problem?

Seems strange indeed, Unfortunately im not in studio now
to run a test and see….Might be wise then to do your
    renders in Vegas 8.

Is the mpeg-1 codec in Vegas 11 a 64 bit codec? The one in Vegas 8 was a 32-bit.
This is the only change I can think of.

Thanks Steve. I would be interested in learning if you can recreate this issue. One other thing I have tried since my post is to try and play the MPEG 1 file created on my Vegas pro 11 machine on a different computer (the one that host Vegas 8) in its windows media player and it actually plays fine.

So to recap if i create a MPEG 1 file in Vegas 8 it plays fine on the Vegas pro 11 machines WMP. If i create a MPEG file in Vegas 11 pro it wont play back in WMP on the same Vegas pro 11 machine it was created on (Windows 7 64bit) but it will play back fine on another computer (32 bit windows XP machine running Vegas 8). For some reason WMP on the new 64 bit windows 7 machine doesn’t like the MPEG 1 render coming from Vegas pro 11.
I should also mention that I have tried turning off the gpu rendering support just in case that was doing something different to the mpeg 1 render (like a slightly differnt variation of the mpeg1 encode)thinking that might have been the culprit, but that didn’t work, still get the error when playing the file back in WMP on the 64 bit machine it was created on.
What i may have to do is install pro 11 on the other 32 bit machine and see if the same problem materializes. Your right i will render all MPEG 1 files in Vegas 8 until i can figure this out. The goal though was for me to be able to donate this machine that had Vegas 8 to a charity group i support inorder to teach young people the tools of video editing so i am hoping to get the problem resolved soon.

You are right Jeff, that is the setup. Do u have any Ideas on why that might cause this. If you look at my last reply to Steve I provided some additional information and steps I have taken to rule a few things out.

    Gary,

At the moment I don’t have any ideas. However, if you would render a 10 second clip from each machine, verify the problem exists in the new clips, and then put them somewhere I can get them, I would check them out. I have 5 video editing machines, 3 with Vegas and one of them is 32 bit.

I just want to check… have ever loaded a codec pack on either of your machines?

I was thinking of doing that now, installing a codec pack. I just downloaded the K-Lite mega pack for 32 & 64 bit. Have not yet installed. would u advise against or for this as a possable solution? This is a brand new build. Only program installed other than Vegas pro 11 build 683 is windows 7 64 bit operating system itself. I would be happy to do that (download a clip) and thanks for the offer to test.

I did not completly answer your question. No on the new 64 bit machine. Yes on the 32 bit machine. I use a program called Time coder pro to sync legal video to transcripts. At one point a few years back i recall i installed a codec pack on the 32 bit machine because the tech support group folks who were helping me with an issue with their software had me do that as a solution to a problem I was having with their software freezing up when using a mpeg 1 render from vegas. after installing the codec pack the problem went away.

[Gary Nargiz] “would u advise against or for this as a possable solution?”

    Never install a codec pack.
The one from K-Lite is well known for replacing the good codecs in Vegas with the inferior ones that come with it.
The only time to install any extra codecs is when you need one for a specific task and then get it from a trusted source, preferably the manufacturer.

Thanks Mike, I was on location when his post came through and could not answer.

Gary, just to re-iterate, don’t install a codec pack. I’m sorry if my mention of them could have been taken as a positive. See what you can do about sample files.

Ok Jeff (& Mike), I will hold off on that. I will upload a sample asap. Thanks again,
