Sorry to hear about this, Victor. I am in the market for a Mac Pro, but I have heard lots of stories similar to yours and there’s no way I’m paying the premium for these machines. Especially considering that, given your downtime, Apple should have continuously fixed all of your machines at no cost to you.

[Eric Strand] “It doesn’t give you 4K 60fps, but it does do 1080 120fps or 60fps.”
Great, so let’s recommend him a camera that doesn’t meet his requirement. That’s some winning advice right there.

July 21, 2016 at 12:45 am in reply to: Adobe Premiere CC Multichannel 5.1 Quicktime to 640kbps Dolby Digital AC3[Ht Davis] “You don’t want to go changing encoders back and forth. Output your video, send it to final cut, and mix it in there”
For reasons I won’t get into, that’s not going to happen. Final Cut Pro 7 is now out of the equation.
[Ht Davis] “you can get great quality video encoding from Compressor,”
Not in my experience, and I have made some decent extra cash by providing a service of not using Compressor to make the masters for physical media delivery. Like people come to me because they had tried to use Compressor and were not happy with the output.
The rest of your advice involves mixing the audio. The audio is already mixed from ProTools. Everything is done and as it should be. All I want to do is turn it into a .AC3 without altering the mix that the client paid for. And then the automator workflow, I have no idea what you are talking about there.

[Ben Lewis] “Is the proxy feature where you can record onto sd cards? “
Yes, it records low bitrate 8-bit 4:2:0 footage for you to edit with.
-
[Aaron Star] “This may not have been worded right. Most Canon DSLRs will kill the HDMI when you hit record, and record to the internal card.”
That is correct, however she explicitly stated that her Canon DSLR was a 5D Mark III. It is well known that the 5D Mark III can be used with an external recorder.

Was the proxy functionality of the C300 Mark II used? I use this all the time, edit from the proxies, then reconnect to the material at the end.
Only time I do not use proxies is for the 10-bit 4:2:2 modes (50 and 160Mbps flavors).

[Alan Lloyd] “Apparently not. I hadn’t looked, as I have not done the 4K upgrade. (No one’s asking for it to this point.)”
And yet you decided to chime in on a camera you don’t even have the 4K functionality activated on yet? You have no idea of its quality and decided to recommend it anyways.
Odd.

[Benjamin Wu] “, I assumed people might understand that when I said “pro”, I was inferring a level of quality and not that I was being paid to produce it. “
People are paid to produce lackluster quality content all the time. That’s not what differentiates a pro.
[Benjamin Wu] “I’m definitely not as knowledgeable as yourself, so perhaps you could enlighten me on why shallow depth of field has anything to do with the camera and not the lens?”
Because if you had taken a Panasonic HC-X1000 and had shot with it wide open at 30mm f/1.8 you would not have had anywhere near the same amount of shallow DoF as your Nikon with the same lens and aperture.
Your question sounds rather flippant (as if you felt you had caught me in a gaff), so I hope that’s not the case.

[Benjamin Wu] “his is my first project and it’s great to get feedback from more experienced people. “
Given that this is your first project, that it’s, boiled down, just a travel montage, and that if you had to do this for a paying client (i.e. professional), you would have to include a messaging aspect of some sort and not just stitch random shots together, then it would be best for you to avoid posting things in the future with the hubris of your title.
Affording a personal trip to Sri Lanka is not pro. Shallow depth of field from a Nikon D5100 is not pro. Hyperlapses shot in exotic locations is not pro. Pro is having your time paid for by a client who wants you to deliver a piece of content for them. That is what a pro video is.

[Matteo Proromo] “That’s why I was considering a compact DSLR, but trouble is I’m not rich: my budget is 6-7000 dollars…tops. That is: EVERYTHING included. Body, lens, memory cards. Do I have hope? :)”
No, you do not. There are no compact DSLR bodies that shoot 4K 60p and none that will for the foreseeable future. The cheapest camera that you can purchase that will do 4Kp50/60 will be the Usra Mini 4K for $3000, then the Ursa Mini 4.6K for $5,000. The Ursa line suffers from quality assurance issues and will fall apart very quickly shooting at ISO speeds over 800. You may also have an assortment of other image issues.
The DSLR style (but not compact as it essentially has a grip built in), is the Canon 1DX Mark II at $6000 that shoots MotionJPEG (comparable to ProRes). It will handle low-light much better than the Ursas, but will have no Log video modes, and limited on-screen tools (such as peaking and a waveform).
The next level up that will be a camera with 4Kp50/60 that is more reliable and better quality in low-light environments will be the Sony PMW-FS7 at $8000.
Any of these cameras will require expensive media, CFast for the Ursas/1DX Mark II and XQD cards for the Sony. You’ll be looking at 176GB per hour of ProRes footage on the Ursas and 270GB per hour on the Sony. CFast media is $370 per 128GB and XQD is $170 per 128GB.
