[Mark Bowes] “OR should i bite the bullet and just transcode all the footage to Proress 422? on inport, “

ProRes is MotionJPEG, so that’s not really going to help. You didn’t say what format you recorded in (4K 23p? 30p? 60p?) We don’t know what GPU your “Mac Pro Dustbin” has (D300? D500? D700?) and are you sure you are RAID 0? You have a 4 drive striped array? That seems dangerous.

[Paul Campbell] “Hmmm, what “minimum” dslr camera do you feel would be best served by the Ninja 2? (I’m thinking down the road upgrade)”

GH4 with it’s decent HDMI downscaling to 1080 from 4K and 10-bit out.

The T5i does not have a proper signal via HDMI to properly record, so a Ninja-2 would be a waste of money. Also, even if it did, you wouldn’t see any difference between what you record in camera vs externally.

[Blaise Douros] “I mean, yeah, this is a site for Q and A…but come on.”

Really, at what point does it become ridiculous if it isn’t stuff like this? Do you want to know if the A7R has a fixed lens or interchangeable lenses? Does it come in different colors? Will it take photos too? Does it run on batteries or AC power only?

That question would fit in well with the above list. People should have some basic responsibility for what they can find easily on the Internet, and then use a forum for questions that aren’t easily searchable.

  • [Sam Harrison] “But the footage that had already been put on a hard drive for me used the Apple Intermediate Codec, and from the file structures, they look like they were used in iMovie before they were given to me.”

There might be something wrong with these files, so I would remove them from the project and see if that improves your stability. If so, you’ll need to transcode them to something else.

  • [John Rofrano] “I agree that on ingestion the files are simply re-wrapped.”

    Thanks for clarifying that.

  • [Jeff Kirkland] “I don’t think anyone’s disputing that it’s a rewrap on import.”

I think John’s response didn’t make that clear if that’s what he’s saying. Of course, on export it will always be a re-encode, because that’s how LongGOP works. But I’m pretty sure he was referring to ingesting AVCHD into FCPX to begin with, because that is the current point of contention.

  • [John Rofrano] “I’m going to say with some certainty that the QuickTime file FCP X produces will definite be a render and not a re-wrap and will not conform to the AVCHD specification of the source.”

It is not a render, it is a re-wrap. I have already been through this on the Premiere Pro forum and have tested it myself. FCPX re-wraps AVCHD into individual QuickTime clips upon import when you ingest the media into the library instead of just leaving it in place. The process is much too quick to be a re-encode.

  • [Yair Bartal] “Well, the reason is I get other responses elsewhere, like in Apple’s formal support forum. That guy says that there IS re-compressing in the export process which involves a quality loss.”

Yes, because if you re-compress with the export, then you will invoke quality loss. But this was already explained to you. And Tom explained it to you to on that link. Why can’t you understand what is going on? What is the problem as to why you cannot grasp this concept? Why do you need to export instead of copying out the re-wrapped clips from your FCPX library? You have failed to do anything but continuously repeat yourself, you have not gone back and rechecked what both Tom and I have told you to check. You have failed to report on anything you have done since you were given new information. Why is this?

  • What is the source of this “Apple Intermedia Codec” videos? If they aren’t from a project from a long time ago, why was this codec used?
