That’s legit, but at the same time there are plenty of people who have gone through school and never even touched an AVID, and that should not be the case.

When someone says “the industry” to me, I think of the broadcast/production houses who will typically post an ad looking for an editor with specific NLE experience.

Here in my experience, I see AVID when an NLE is requested, then Final Cut, then Premiere, then FCPX.

I’ve seen Smoke once or twice as well.

Film editing is a different beast than what most students will be doing, I would imagine. From what I can tell, it’s simply an editor, with not much in the “finishing” department. If all you need to do is stitch clips together and then export an EDL/XML for online finishing, that’s one thing, but when you need the NLE to basically run it from selects to final export, I don’t know if Lightworks is good for that.

Yeah, the Seagate drives with the Thunderbolt add-on adapter will be the same price, and you still have the add-on adapter.

I don’t think you’ll find any portable drives with TB pass-through at this time, so I wouldn’t worry about that.
