Thanks a lot for the offer — that’s very kind of you, and you’re off the hook: I ended up getting there the long way.

I had an old 2013 iMac sitting around, so I put Mojave on a spare partition and ran Final Cut Pro 7 through Retroactive (that’s what clears the “blocked” circle-slash icon on the app), with a copy a friend dug up for me. First time I’ve opened FCP 7 in about 15 years. The projects open fine and the XMLs come out clean even with all the media offline — the first one was a 40-minute timeline, 1,455 cuts, 72 nested sequences, 304 files referenced, and Premiere took it without complaining.

Your tip about exporting the whole project XML in one go instead of sequence by sequence is going straight into my process, though, so thanks for that too — I was doing it the slow way.

And since I’ve got a working FCP 7 machine now: if anyone in this thread needs an old .fcp turned into XML, I’m glad to return the favor. Just say the word.

Hi Doug, Dennis — one more for the pile, if either of you has a moment.

I found a handful of FCP 7 projects from 2008-2010 on an old drive that I need to get back into, and everything I have now is Apple Silicon, so there’s no way to open them.

Would one of you be able to open them and export XML? The main one is a 15 MB project file, with three smaller ones alongside it. All the sequences are HDV 1080i60. The media will come up offline on your end — from what I’ve read here, the XML still exports fine that way. If it’s easier, a separate XML per sequence works for me.

I didn’t want to dump files into the thread uninvited, so just say the word and I’ll attach them here or send them over WeTransfer, whichever you prefer. No rush at all — whenever you’re between projects.
