I dunno about all that. I’m cutting in FCPX (latest version) on my 2009 Mac Pro
tower. Yeah, I’ve upgraded it, but it’s a six year old computer. In other words, I have
saved enough money by using FCX (instead of ‘paying Adobe’s rental’ over that same six years)
to buy FCPX, Motion, Compressor, AND buy a new Mac as well (ie pay the ‘Apple tax’).
So not sure you can say Apple is ‘Disregarding anyone with an older system’ as FCP X runs on a
six year old computer just fine. Now if it only ran on the new Mac Pros and laptops, I’d agree
    with you.

  • Sorry, my original response was cut off somehow when I posted.
I have edited it to include the part that was cut off.

As to FCPX and if it can output while you continue to edit…yeah you can.
There are two ways to output, one using the ‘share’ menu and another by
    exporting to Compressor.

I cut my demo reel (with tons of quick 5 frame edits) on an old 2009 Mac Pro using FCP X. Only time I had any problems was when I initially was being stupid and hadn’t transferred the footage over to my work RAID and was editing from a USB 2 external drive. Once I noticed the stuttering problems and dragged the footage over to my RAID , it worked just fine. I actually think the magnetic timeline (which I am NOT a big fan of in general) is perfect for editing to quick beats. Of course this was with AVCHD footage from a FS700 and I have done a lot of upgrades to my 2009 Mac Pro (CPU upgrade from single Quad 2.66ghz to single Hex 3.46ghz and GPU upgrade from GT120(512MB) to GTX 980 Ti (6GB). This was using newest FCPX on Yosemite.

  • Eh…..and then there is that subscription thing. Which puts it at the back of
the pack of NLE’s by two county leagues (that’s like almost 6 miles).

In all honesty, NLEs are kind of like cameras. They all have stengths and
weaknesses and there isn’t a perfect one out there.

That’s a pretty good list, I had about 7 or 8 of those on ‘my list’ as well.
The only one that you don’t have that I personally would like to see,
is the ability to attach secondary storylines to other secondary storylines
instead of being forced to connect every secondary storyline to the primary
    storyline.

Yup, you are going to have problems. Your graphics card has less than the minimum amount of RAM than Resolve 12 says it needs…..

From what I can tell, it is highly dependent of the GPU, so it really
depends what card you have as far as good real time playback.
I have been searching through the ‘DaVinci Configuration guide’
in search of approved cards, and can only find 10 listed ‘approved’ GPU’s.
It also says that ‘minimum’ GPU RAM for HD is 2 GB, ‘approved’ is 3 GB
and ‘minimum’ GPU RAM for UHD/4K is 4 GB and ‘approved’ is 8 GB.
So in theory if you have a card that meets those specs you are good…..

    Speaking of comprehension……
I was not addressing your ‘original’ comment about training wheels.
I was addressing the comment you made ‘after’ that
where you implied that FCP X was somehow ‘faster’
    than a track based editor.

[David Mathis] “I do not see a trackless timeline as a bike with training wheels nor do I see a timeline with tracks has training wheels either. Going back to tracks will not require my brain going crazy. Sure there will be a couple of extra steps but not that complicated. I actually like the style that X uses, gets out of your way allowing for more efficient editing with less time concetrating on track assignments. Not saying tracks are bad, just a different approach. Just my two cents, carry on!

I’d be a lot happier with FCP X if they’d let me connect ‘secondary storylines’ to other ‘secondary storylines’
instead of forcing me to connect to the primary storyline every time! Well, if I’m getting into feature
requests, I want ‘send to Motion’ back as well. Those two features sure would make me a lot happier!
