Try something immediate and reliable.
My suggestion to get you out of a jam immediately,
1. Step one. Determine if your input will be RGBS out of a decoder, (rare but good). composite video or SVHS composite video right from the VHS machine to the capture card, or VHS machine to firewire or USB converter back to reencoding into the capture card.
1a. (The reasons for the different types above is what capture cards are available etc., and a particular workflow might let you drop in a camera and prism scanner for film or a camera rescanning from a monitor if you have to transfer off a terribly burned VHS. Usually it is just the composite video or SVHS into the cheap-o capture card.
2. Good, now you can use your cheap-o capture card to fire into a PC computer run on either the cheap-o card`s original software and maybe Windows 2000 and a Yamaha/ESS or Creative sound card, or use Ubuntu Studio 9.10 or 10.10 with the exact same hardware and the optional advantage of editing. Ubuntu Studio happens to be really terrific at burning DVDs using the just about failing DVD burners of that we often have some around. By the way, when installing Ubuntu Studio there`s a place in the middle of the hour`s install where it asks you if you want to install,
11. 2D, 3D (Sounds like publishing, maybe not.).
22. (Something I forget.) Answer, No!
33. LADSPA horror audio. Answer, No!
44. Audio Video editing. (Audio only Sound Recorder? I forget.) Answer, yes!
3. Now you`re out of the jam. You can now concentrate on if your Hackintosh G5 will accept An AJA Kona LH family or BlackMagic DeckLink family card etc without losing your shirt during the next weeks. Next questions still here on the Cow. One trouble is that the manufacturers obviously make and sell too few of these cards. I can`t figure out a good logic why. -
If you get drunk and knock over your own booth and try to sell your equipment on the floor then you can`t go to the party. Otherwise, go and tell us what happened and what we missed. I`m not going. I have to stay here and simoniz the cash register.

A relay lens behind your zoom (or prime) field lens will turn your ARRI Alexa into a NEC/Ampex BCC4 camera in the blink of an eye. Also, Chris it looks like you haven`t picked up the concept that the most successful (flexible) cameramen use their zooms for their wides and middles and their primes for their most telephoto shots regardless of lens budget. Also, BUY your Alexa or two, BUY your lenses, (even if it, they, have to shoot 19 hours a day to get back the costs practically).

A 2/3 inch ENG lens is disciplined to make a good image on the photosurface that`s at best, only 7/8 of an inch wide from circle outside to circle outside, or corner to opposite corner; much too small for the Alexa`s photosurface. It needs twice that diameter. Putting a relay lens between the Alexa and a small zoom would work hopelessly poor. If you need an anamorphic zoom, my lens man says a brand new Hawk will purr. If you need a cheap regular zoom just steal a stubby zoom off a 35 MM or 126? 127? I forget, roll film camera. If you need my type of zoom you can`t afford it much though I wish they grew on trees. What`s the source and final picture aspect ratio by the way?

The computer still knows how to redetect the RAID if things are back to normal but it looks like pulling the cable with power on caused one hard drive to write a data burn at or near the beginning. Since your data is PC based, take your RAID array (with the computer or not) along with a new 2 TB hard drive to transfer the data to, and the technician can use regular data rescue software to back up whatever is there. If you fried a hard drive card you can get it replaced at Drives Solutions in California. If you fried your RAID card or a cable, just buy another. Chris, much of the problem of ailments of both manual and electric zooming can be avoided by having your lens man clean up its insides and the cabling outside often enough. To get satisfactory results out of a slightly cheap style zoom avoid the most telescopic reaches. They dim the picture excessively. Fortunately the Alexa doesn`t have as long a back distance from the rear of the lens to the photolayer as does a prism or mirrors color camera but you should still choose a reasonably stubby lens. I have my own favorite zoom lens but I know that everybody has their own area of what they think matters so that if I named mine there would just be a war of words in this topic between all parties. Visit an Alexa in production with a sensible lens user with you. You`ll soon have your answer.

Also since “one hard drive is failing” when there`s new hard drives, you may have a bad power supply plug on it or the power supply might be putting out the wrong voltages. Measure them. Unfortunately new hard drives can fail too.

Next to all of that software you will need about 1,000 watts of electricity when editing at regular speed. An all- windgenerator or other single means of making this much electricity on a sailboat less than 100 feet long will hit shortages for weeks at a time unless you design better than this. I am glad that you figured out that it takes fully 3 years to sail around the world. Regardless of what we say visit a few other Alexa productions in operation to get the best idea of what works how well.
