    [Craig Seeman]

Apple does not want to risk anyone (again) threatening to pull support whether it be Avid or Adobe … because they don’t want to leave themselves vulnerable.

Of course some of you just think Apple was being a (expletive of your choice) … Apple’s a business. … [This] was part of the longer plan …

    Craig,

You never fail to amaze me with your flattering speculation about “Apple’s position”.

But I think you need to read your statements above and think about the business decisions that people have described here (actual decisions, mind you, not speculation) in light of certain “vulnerabilities” that Apple’s recent moves have made apparent – vulnerabilities of long term support, vulnerabilities in terms of reliance on one vendor.

We have facts about motivations for one set of decisions (which you seem to dismiss as “emotional”) and speculation about another set of decisions (which you seem to feel is sound business).

Your sympathies are always apparent, but what I often see in your posts is a real emotional investment (or maybe other kinds?) in the success of a company.

What is good for Apple is not at all synonymous with what is good for many editors. Discussion of that reality should not be dismissed as “emotional”.

On the other hand, if you were talking about Aindreas …

… a bit of a dry read, but there was this gem (in the orig excerpt linked by Craig):

If Apple hadn’t decided to buy Final Cut then, it would not exist today, …

… Which is ironic. Because Apple did buy Final Cut. And it doesn’t exist today.

[Walter Soyka] “can you imagine if every major effect had its own separate interface in its own separate control application”

    Walter, re: separate interfaces

I can do more than imagine distinct interfaces for effects – whenever I open up a DAW and use effects.

In fact, I thought FCPX uses the Logic plug-ins – are they stripped of their interface or more standardized than I’m familiar with? (I haven’t used Logic).

Not sure what you mean by “seperate control application” though.

[David Roth Weiss] “I actually heard that the latest drivers …”

    David,

The forums seem to be a grande chorale work based around this theme (lots of debates on dissonance vs. harmony), but I’d be interested to your results if you get around to it.

I’m still on 10.6.7 and I was using the latest pre-Lion drivers.

[David Roth Weiss] “… and use the proceeds to buy a Matrox device, such as the new MXO2 LE with T-bolt. That way you’ll be covered in just about every way possible.”

    David,

I’m not so sure about that. I attempted a 30 day trial on PPro and it was pretty flaky with my MXO2 LE – from the Matrox forums here that seems to be a common experience; my feeling is “wait and see” with both Matrox and Adobe, hopefully they can develop more convincing stability.

I’m interested to hear more about using it with Avid too.

It’s pretty good with my FCP7 set-up though I find the audio scrub response is a bit laggy. There were problems with Matrox drivers / FCP for a long time though they seem to be ironed out.

    Bill,

I’m not sure why you would want to generalize the discussion here in a way that reduces it to “general angst”.

What I see and read is (amongst other things) people discussion specific issues and problems.

I am sure any one poster has lots of positive things to say about technology, process, and results. There are also lots of specific issues with FCPX and Apple that have been detailed.

If you go looking for complaints on the internet …

    Gary, thanks.

How much footage were you dealing with?

Do you have an estimate of the number of sequences you had in one project by the end?

[Gary Huff] “there was a few minute load time once the project had to load all the footage.”

I am assuming by this that you mean this was time for the project to open each time you started?

    Walter,

I still have the comfort of time before making my own decisions, but I haven’t really read anywhere of anyone using PPro for longer, larger projects (specifically meaning hundreds of hours of footage and hundreds of sequences over months of editing).

Have you had experience with this or know of anyone else’s?

It’s also worth noting that my own experiences testing PPro revealed some pretty flaky behavior with hardware (Matrox MXO2 LE) though I have heard this is less of an issue on Windows machines.

But are they? Who said they are?

    Walter,

Thanks (again) for the clear-headed reality check.

Since I’m not up on current PCIe max-outs, I’ll pick up on this:

[Walter Soyka] “Also, I’ll dispute that Thunderbolt is the high end: it’s 4x PCIe. Thunderbolt is one-quarter of the high-end of expansion.”

    … and ask:

What are the current technologies that put the heaviest demands on the PCIe channels? What needs 4x? What needs more?

I’m interested because it’s seems to be hinted at often (here) that Thunderbolt replaces the need for expansion slots.

    Franz.
