[alban egger] “FCPX has already sold more copies than all FCP versions together.”

    Alban,

    This is false.

There was some marketing spin that might lead you to this conclusion a while back. But the number Apple announced at NAB 2014 was “over a million”. This was lower than generally expected, and behind other NLE numbers currently.

[Charlie Austin] “I’m not sure what you’re saying… All I’m saying is that I find that the audio tools in X work just fine. I find key framing and using a mixer to to be a PITA. I never said FCP 7 or Pr or anything was “broken”.”

    Charlie,

I’m only saying that if you’d like a easier, faster, more responsive way to add keyframes, then that tool exists in FCP7. If you’re happy without it then you don’t need it of course, but calling keyframing audio levels in FCP7 a “pain-in-the-ass” ignores tools designed precisely to make such a thing easier.

    Charlie,

    … to recap:

[Charlie Austin] ” … because the only alternative is key framing which is a PITA.”

[Franz Bieberkopf] “… try the mixer. It makes adjusting levels so intuitive and direct that you’ll forget you’re making keyframes.”

[Charlie Austin] “I’ve tried the mixer… I rarely used it in FCP “classic”.”
[Charlie Austin] “I just never liked it… faster to just stick to the timeline.”

It’s a bit disingenuous to complain that you prefer your pain-in-the-ass method.

Isn’t the general chorus here that you don’t complain if you’re “not using it properly” or some such? Yes, here it is:

[Charlie Austin] “But saying something’s broken because it doesn’t work the way you want it to is… inaccurate. :-)”

    Charlie,

To be clear, that was my suggestion …

[Charlie Austin] “I was actually referring to editing/mixing the actual music”

    Charlie,

    So was I.

[Charlie Austin] ” Nobody uses “dissolves” editing music, at least nobody I know.”

    Charlie,

I haven’t been following the finer points of this particular tempest in a teacup, but I use dissolves or crossfades or whatever you would have them called to edit music.

    [Steve Connor] “Anything to add?”

    Steve,

Well, they’ve all been “improving steadily” and have “loyal and growing user bases”, so I wouldn’t single out FCPX for that. (There’s probably an argument that Premiere Pro has improved more and grown more.)

Avid’s financial uncertainty is probably also worth mentioning, as well as it’s embrace of both rental and perpetual license models.

Lightworks and now Resolve are still outliers. (… and other?).

But I think the big surprise is FCP 7 still alive and widespread in 2014. This is what “end of life” looks like. That really is something, and one would like to think that fact registers somewhere at Apple.

    Franz.

  • [Marcus Moore] “… we’d have to think they sold WAY more in the last year than they did in the first year. So FCP X unit sales for 2014 might be closer to 600,000, depending on what the sales curve looks like.”

    Marcus,

I suppose there are lots who might believe the same.

    Original thread:

    Conclusion:

[Franz Bieberkopf] “…the total for “iTunes, Software, and Services” comes from Apple – and the rest is just his guesses at how that breaks down.”

The numbers that he’s dreamed up are way off.

FCPX is selling about 300,000 per year – that’s 90million per year on FCPX sales. It’s more or less consistently their “highest grossing” software, which means that Logic and Aperture gross less than that per year.

The math from there gets nowhere near 2 Billion.

    Franz.
