i realize this is an old thread, but i had the same problem and figured out the answer, at least for me. i thought i should reply since even though this question is unanswered, it is the 2nd search result on google for people with this problem.

when you are weighting, make sure you have hypernurbs turned off or you won’t be able to see the colored weight influences.
