September 27, 2011 at 1:13 pm in reply to: Choosing a Mac Pro & Card for a 4k-ready v2.1 installRegarding 4k output: right now there are not many devices that support 4k inputs; personally I think when 4k devices will be cheap enough to be used in a wide range, there probably will be a new connector or way to hook them up (like HDMI+ or something like that). So if you don´t need 4k output now, I probably would go with a card that supports your analog input options.
You can work with 4k material in a Media 100 4k timeline and get a HD output through e.g. a Kona3 card, though, which makes it easy to work with 4k timelines now.
An 8core MacPro is pretty fast for that, since playback uses a lower res decode anyway. Rendering will be speeded up by the number of CPUs you have, of course, unless you put a RedRocket card into your MacPro. The RedRocket card is the only one that will do acceleration for Red material debayer & decoding right now.

Wow, 5 minutes is MUCH too long. It takes a moment to launch Boris for the first time, but it should not take that long. Have you tried deleting your Boris prefs? And try reinstalling Suite 2.1, since Red comes with Suite; maybe you have installed a wrong version of Red?

Luckily OSX is pretty clever with 64-bit support. It runs in 64 bit, but lets 32bit application run along in 32bit mode. No problems, at least not on our systems.

The plugin gets installed in the right folder automatically (at least if it is selected in the Installer). Adobe has new recommended locations for Plugins; in case of CS5.5 this is Library->ApplicationSupport->Adobe->Common->Plugins->CS5.5

September 14, 2011 at 3:08 pm in reply to: Video layer renders clean but txt/gfx look single-fielded?Could you tell me what your settings were (SD or HD, framerate)? And was your source footage which you placed on the progressive timeline interlaced or progressive? I work with progressive (and psf) timelines quite often, and usually they look okay. I would like to try to reproduce your problem.

With the addition of the 2k/3k/4k formats the range of choices has increased dramatically. But usually you can decide based on what format you shot in and what you need to deliver.

I guess the message is not related to sample rates, but to frame rates. Problem is that each audio file also has a frame rate (so it can display timecode in the edit suite, and that you can set mark ins and outs). Since you cannot mix different audio frame rates in a timeline, you probably get this message.
Make sure that when you import the mp3 files, that your system is set to the right standard. You also can force the system to import into a standard in the File Import dialog, when selecting the “Import into selected format and codec” button at the bottom.

The XLR audio is digital only. You need a Analog->Digital Converter for the audio, for example this one.

Do you have the boards in the system (if you have a big grey, very massive box you most likely have the Media 100 HDx hardware breakout box)? You need to have the HDx hardware in the system to actually connect the breakout box.
For connecting analog sources, as far as I remember the HDx hardware only had analog ins on the daughter board via a multi-cable connection. Or it may even have no analog ins at all, only outputs. Not 100% sure, but if you want I can have a look tomorrow, since we still have a HDx hardware lying around somewhere, I think.
So if there´s only SDI ins and outs, you won´t have much look hooking up a BetaSP without a converter to SDI.
