Since your Media 100 version has not been updated in years, the “old” article is still valid for your system. And, yes, if you want a great result, BitVice is still the way to go. The only real question is where you want to encode, on your G4 or on your iMac. I would recommend doing the encoding on the iMac, since it will be MUCH faster with the new BitVice 2. But one thing you then have to do is to bring your material over to the iMac, either via Network or via e.g. a FireWire drive, which will take longer than only a by-ref export. If you want to bring it over to the iMac I would recommend a “self contained” export from Media 100 i instead of the by-ref export, since you will get a QuickTime with your whole material. If you do the export to a FireWire drive you can use as a transfer disk, you could simply bring the disk over to the iMac and do the encoding there.
Make sure that you download the Intel-compatible Media 100 codecs from the Media 100 website (found under Support->Download->V12+). Or, if you want to do yourself a favor, get a copy of Media 100 Producer for the iMac to see the benefits of the new releases. -

I have done some initial tests with both, and so far not run into any problems. So if you are between projects and if you have a backup of your startup disk and projects you should give it a try. 😉

Okay, it is a “Kernel Panic” you are getting, which is one of the lowest-level crashes you can get on OSX. Usually this is related to some sort of hardware problem.
One thing you should do is to run your “Media 100 Hardware Test” application to see if you have a hardware problem with your board.
As you said V8.2 and OSX 10.3 is really an old configuration, and I cannot really remember what OS, QuickTime and Media 100 combination was recommended there. One thing you could try, though, is to compare your OS and Quicktime (and Media 100 i) versions to a system which is working to see if there is a difference. Plus, it would be interesting to know what CPU/Computer you are using.
And, you should check what codec you are rendering to in AE. Try rendering into the Media 100 i codec directly, and try limiting the data rate for the codec to 6000k/sec (in the AE output module settings). -

one issue is (or could be) that your media seems to report a strange framerate, at least the short clip you sent me. If you look at the framerate in QuickTime player it reports 22.80 fps; this makes the clip “slow import” into my system (it imports but gets converted to the selected coded). The framerate could be different for your longer clips, so they could fast-import.
From what I heard the reason for your Error -157 Line 505 could be related to the fact that you don´t have the Apple Uncompressed 422 component installed. Did you move the Uncompressed codec over from your FCP partition? If not, try it, maybe this fixes (at least a part of) your problems. -
Hmmm, “shuts down” like “turns off”? Or does the application crash? What software/hardware/OS version do you use? What are your render settings&codec? Any additional info, like error messages,…?

If you want to do a “slow import” (conversion to the selected codec) there is a checkbox at the bottom of the import window saying something like “import into selected codec and format”. If you check this box, the material should import into your selected codec.
Anyway, there is something not working as expected. If you do see the image in Quicktime player, you should see it in Media 100 if it fast-imports. What framerate does your material have?
Do you have a chance of uploading a sample file somewhere?

Did you install RED additionally to your Media 100 12.6 suite software? Media 100 12.6 does include RED (renamed and integrated as Composite Suite), so if you installed RED additionally this may cause a conflict.
I would recommend uninstalling Media 100, then look if there is a Media 100 folder left in the Applications folder, and if there is anything related to RED left in there. Then reinstall 12.6, and you should be good to go. -
Have you set up your “Media Destinations” correctly for title clips? What software and OS version are you using?
