I totally agree with you. I’ve been editing with M100 since the begining and with FC since 5 years ago. I’ve edited some long features in M100 and a couple in FC (it was when M100 doesn’t supported XDCAM nor HDV), and I feel so much comfortable and faster with my M100 (I also have HDe, MXO2).
I feel that FC is like to use a swiss-army knife with spoon and fork to cook and eat. You can do the work, because you have all you suppose to need, but it will be so annoying…

Now I’m editing another feature project in my M100 suite, but this time after use my small & lightweight M100 Suite MXO2 unit in the set, recording HD “live” signal from the camera. It is so good and quickly that I’m so sad thinking that I’ll need to edit my next project (January) in FC7 again, because M100 doesn’t support AVC-INTRA codec from Panasonic yet.

I know how hard have worked all the M100/Boris team to take this wonderfull tool to the place that it has reached again, but I hope that they could do something about AVC-Intra support to take advantage of all the power that I feel every time that I sit in front of the controls of my M100 Suite.

September 21, 2009 at 2:14 pm in reply to: VariCam 3700 vs Canon 7D HDSLR for Theatrical Release

    Hi, Daniel.
I have an hpx-3700 and I’ve been making documentaries and features using all kind of cameras for 15 years. If you can choose, I recommend to use the 3700 because it is a camera developed with all the needs of this bussines in mind. It is a work horse that will work great in any location and time, with one of the most amazing quality of the hi end market. You must think in ergonomics, in have peace of mind, but you must think in all the workflow matters too; I’m sure that your editor will thank you for sinc-ed audio and easy workflow.
In both cases you must be so carefull backuping media too.

If isn’t a dramatic matter of costs, you must go trough the 3700 way. But if you need a discret 2nd camera for a less invasive and intimidating presence, take a HDSRL with you.

    All the best

Hi, We´ve been working 12 hours/day and my M100 Studio is walking with a lame leg. It’s so comfortable to have a real M100 on the set but it have lost the sinc during digitizing in 2 of each 10 takes, saying that the clip media have itt’s corrupted.

I’ve been using the “clicking out an in” to restore sinc and it solves quickly the issue but I’ve lost time, takes and patience.

It’s true that the problem is far bigger acquiring video+audio, and tonight I have tried to record only audio, several times, but I couldnt. I’ve tried to use a single composite video signal as a reference (ref in) but it doesn’t worked too.

I’ve get CPU performance alerts from time to time, and disc problems as well.

My 17″ 2.66 Ghz has 4 Gb RAM and my Raid can write over the Mbytes/sec needed to acquire DVCPRO HD 1080i60.
I’m waiting a 8 Gb kit of new RAM to reinforce my system.

In Spite of all of this, It’s so great to have a real M100 on the set. I’ve been using it from the begining, 15 years ago, and I’ve always dreamed to have a powerfull and compact system like this with me.
(6 years ago we get a whole Edit suite (M100i) to the Amazonas to film our first video to film project, and it was SO cumbersome)

    Congratulations!

    Some questions:
Can we work using ProRes 4444 codec?
    What about AVC-INTRA?

Do you have some hardware/firmware update plan to get the 3700 beyond the 30 fps in the future?
    At least in 4:2:2?
I love this camera, I’m buying one right now, but I feel that I’ll need more fps with her soon, instead of my HVX200 or some rented one.

    Hi Doug,
You can export your PGM to XML and open it in Final Cut. Ther you can sellect Time Code Generator in Video Filters, an then export a Qtm movie or playback to some deck or DVD recorder
