I ran into the same problem, and the info I was getting from the web sort of helped me come to this solution, which seems to work perfectly:

I’m having the same issue with After Effects CC, but JUST TRYING TO TOGGLE BETWEEN AE AND FINDER. NO OTHER PROGRAMS OPEN. This has happened to me with two different machines in our studio, both with the following specs:

2×2.93 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
64 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

On one machine I was working on a project with about 25 layers, on the other machine a project with 3 layers.

Makes me think it’s a bug in AE. Any others having similar issues?

This is the only way I have been able to work around this. Very inefficient, if you ask me, but the best I’ve got…

Say you have 2 video/audio clips and 1 audio only clip you want to multi cam. Select the 2 A/V clips and create the multicam clip. Open the new multi cam clip in the timeline, copy and paste the audio only clip into the timeline. That should do it.
