I imported and then exported a “same as source” QT and then another Custom Options QT with Compression as “None” and “Millions of colors” (which is the original file). The exports are worse than the original when played in QT.

This leads me to believe there is some problem with the import.

    :/

If it helps, the codec on the original QT is YUV422.

They came from the telecine lab. The lab did a telecine and transferred to digi-Beta tapes. Then they used some software to transfer them uncompressed.

The files, when I just play them in Quicktime, look just like the tapes. They look great. When I import them, supposedly “1:1”, they look horrible.

I can even open a QT window right next to the composer window and compare the quality, so the problem is not in the original files.

    Any ideas?

My original files were film transferred to digi-Beta then digi-Beta 1:1 to my Maxtor 1.5 Tb hard drive. Then from there, I imported 15:1 to cut.

When I compare the files, I am comparing them both on my dual Dell computer monitors, literally side-by-side. I open up the uncompressed 1:1 QT file in QT Player next to the Composer in Avid, and the QT file looks much better, even though the text box says that the file was transferred 1:1. It looks like I’m being capped at DV 50 or 5:1.

    thanks for any help,
    Mike

Sorry for the stupid question, but What is an SCSI drive, and do I need that to import at uncompressed 1:1 SD?

Sorry, it’s my fault for not being clear.

I have uncompressed QT files on a hard drive.

I imported at 15:1 and cut my project.

Now I am trying to up-rez to 1:1 (via batch import). I thought with Mojo that you could up-rez your footage from 15:1 to 1:1, upping the quality. From what I have been reading, I may have been mistaken. That even with Mojo, I still need to find a different system to finish on.

That said, I still believe that Avid advertises that you can capture, edit, and playback at 1:1, so I’m confused.

I was just using my eye. I could clearly see some digital artifacting, where there was none on the original uncompressed QT files. I just opened them both up, and put them side-to-side.

Thanks a lot. That did it. I forgot that after telecine, the NTSC video is lower field first.

I really really appreciate the help.

Video mixdown didn’t work, unfortunately. Thanks for the suggestion. Any others?
