Thanks Matt for the DPX naming…

If there is not timecode present in VITC then use a “REC run” function, that means the software has to “remember” what was the last recorded timecode either by storing it or by looking at the last recorded frame on the particular project.

Also a big problem is the captured RGB range… we need when we do Prores 444 or DPX to capture in the 10bit range 0 to 1023 values.

Matt have in mind that the application is going to be used for on set capture, so it will not always be connected to a VTR… so the timecode should be grabbed from VITC also…

Also it will be great if the ME can act as a VTR… by emulating a VTR slave mode…

The last two things are quite big…

It would be perfect if along with the high resolution files also to capture a Prores proxy for editorial.

And to be able to playback with a 3D LUT…

An one that is coming from my dreams… use (somehow) your H264 USB device to create off line (or online) dailie’s for ipods iphones etc…

Bob, from my experience leave detail off and add it in post it will be much better… detail function in Varicam (as in all camcorders) is a post function that happens before the tape recording… since its post, gather your image and do it selectively in real post…

    Try the filmrec mode…

We would like to have the updates in a separate installer, if possible, outside of the drivers since the software is in beta state…

I don’t like to install the drivers every time that I test ME2…

    Matt, thanks for the response.

I just wanted to state that a more open selection on the capture preferences will be essential…

    1. Select input 720,1080,2k,RGB dual link, single, 3Gps etc.
    2. Select codec with options.
    3. Select downconversion options if applicable

Plus I have tested the RGB capture with my Viper to DPX.

    1. The DPX’s didn’t had a name in this form [name of take].000000.dpx I had to use automator to rename them
    2. The 4 digits are not enough a 7 or 8 digits would be ok, again I used automator to renumber them.
    3. The regular numbering of DPX’s should be the VITC timecode converted to absolute frame number in 8 digits form. This is the norm on scanned DPX’s. Or if there is no TC from VITC is good to have an option like the TC_Regen/RecRun on videos
    4. The DPX that i did capture didn’t open in Color, I will check with other software if they open.

I want to state also that this software is longly waited from DIT’s around the world, so a VITC time code stamp will be very useful for many applications, also a programmable keyboard shortcuts will be perfect for on set use.

I hope I give some feedback that will be added to the first release…

    I just tried it…

It looks like silk… The test’s I run were on a MacPro.

I have to state two problems…

    1. I couldn’t use it at 1280 x 800 resolution… It locks at 1920 x 1200… thats a big problem when you don’t have big displays handy especially on set…

They could add some scroll bars on the clips side and resize the viewing window. The 1280 x 800 resolution should be the minimum…

    2. I couldn’t select which Prores codec I want it says just “Apple prores” also I would like to be able to select other codec’s found in the machine like sheer video or cineform… and we need to be able to access the options of the codec’s also.

That’s my first impressions that depressed me immediately…

    The problem Jeremy is:

Can someone communicate that to Panasonic developers?

This feature is a big one, it really unleash the potential of the FilmRec and AVC-I! the EDL export can be with cuts dissolves and simple speed effects… Also an upscale option to 1080p in the exporter (using Lazcos algorithm preferably) for the 720p footage would make the exporter complete…

    Probably am just dreaming…

So you suggesting to export 30 hours in DPX and then conform with Glue tools? 30hours in DPX is 9,5Tbytes at 720p and 24Tbytes that at 1080p… don’t mention the weeks of exporting that needed…

No offense but the exporter is not for serious work… Just a glimpse of what we can have in the unknown future…

I don’t wont to go back to AVC-I just do the next step…

I edit with AVC-I… when editing is finished I need to go to DPX… How I will do that?

Glue tools … OK I have glue tools since a year now, so what?

How you gonna tell to P2 Manager which files to export form a 30hours material of a feature length movie?

You need an EDL, and a conform process… or go thru FCP and loose all the blacks below 60…

As I said when FilmRec is engaged the cameras are recording from 0 to 1023 in AVC-Intra and not 60 to 940 which FCP is handling.

So below 60 is another stop of latitude… that we all throw when we are using standard video tools…

If you grade the exported DPX in color you will immediately notice the much richer blacks!…

With awesome results in filmRec mode…
The blacks in Color are behaving like a film scan!
The down side is that their is no conform from EDL so everything is done by hand!…
