  • Hi Jayasri,

The 2014 edition of the Audio Repair and Enhancement will absolutely be relevant if you’re using RX 5! The guide is something that is on our backlog to get updated but we haven’t gotten to it yet. Additionally, if you’re more into watching videos than reading, you might want to check out this webinar I did a few months back: While I use Pro Tools in the video, the workflow will be very much the same in Media Composer. I hope RX 5 is working out great for you!

  • Hi Ty,

Thank you, we’re glad to hear RX is making a difference in your work on Aches And Gains!

Even if the location of the interviewee was completely silent (which I’m sure 99% of the time, it is not), lossy compression for streamed content can wreak all sorts of havoc on audio so I’ll bet you’ve had your work cut out for you.

We plan on being back at AES NY this year so if you’re headed back, we will see you there!

  • Hi Richard,

Thank you for the kind words! Sounds like the Denoiser got a good workout on that one, eh? Should you decide to invest in RX (or before then just for some good audio repair knowledge), I’d definitely recommend downloading our free Audio Repair Guide to help get the most out of it! There’s a number of best practices that can help you get the best result (e.g. running a few passes of the Denoiser at a lower reduction setting as opposed to a single pass at a higher reduction setting) in there, and even if you don’t use RX, there’s a lot of good general audio repair and enhancement knowledge to be gained.

Thanks for the link, we saw it there and are actually currently awaiting approval on our account!

    Hi all!

In the case where it’s difficult to visualize the particular audio issue in RX, there’s a few things that might help:

First it might help to change the brightness of the spectrogram, by clicking and dragging the “dB” bar to the right of the screen.

Second, if you’re dealing with beeps, it might help to switch the Spectrogram type to Adaptively Sparse, which is good for identifying harmonic content (like beeps!). The option to change Spectrogram type can found by right clicking on the spectrogram and selecting “view Spectrogram Settings.”

And third, changing the Color map (also in the “view Spectrogram Settings” option) to one of the Multicolor options might help better highlight the problem!

    Hi Daniel,

As Ty mentioned, the Declip module in RX will likely be your best bet! In some extreme cases where Declip does not completely take care of the distortion, using Decrackle on higher frequencies can help to further reduce unwanted distortion as well.

If you check out page 28 of our free Audio Repair Guide, it’ll take you through the steps of tackling distortion (including a potential final pass with Deconstruct, as you mentioned!). That chapter of the Audio Repair Guide is aimed primarily at fixing dialogue, but the steps are pretty much the same for music or any other kind of distorted audio as well.

    Happy repairing!
