I know it’s a bit confusing, but, If you shoot 720p/30, you can edit in 720p/30 or 60. 30 Saves space while digitizing too. If shooting at 1080i/30p you have 2 choice for editing. DVCProHD1080i/30p or 60i.
Personally, I’ve liked shooting at 720p/30 and 720p/24 instead of 1080i and doing any up-conversion after editing. Not that I’ve noticed any artifacting in camera, but editing is easier and saves space.
Oh, remember to set the camera shutter to 1/2 while shooting 30p.

If you are shooting at 720p/59.94 30fps, you can choose to edit at either DVCProHD720/30 or 60. I edit at 720p/30 all the time. And on 1080i projects, you would never set it to 1080i/25p as that is a PAL format. You would only edit at DVCPro1080i/60.
Those are the easy FW native formats, some editors work in different formats like ProRes and import footage thru HD-SDI. But, with Firewire, the DVCProHD codecs look pretty nice.

The industry standard is the Sennheiser 416. But, I actually have a fairly inexpensive Azden for my small HDV camera that sounds darn good. The Azden SGM1x. It’s very reasonable, but I actually use it a lot for interviews with great results. It lacks a little bottom end, but that sometimes helps in noisy enviroments. And it’s $200 vs. $1K.

I always connect all pieces before powering up. Yeah, there was some posts about surge issues plugging-in while hot.
It’s easy to have FCP to record the HDX900 FW signal. Just open FCP, use Easy Setup, pick you settings and go to Log & Capture. The camera appears ready to record.
What are you using for storage? In my MacBook Pro, I have a eSATA card running to a small 2-drive external RAID. Works perfectly.

Yes, the Firewire works at the same time while recording to tape. The FW tap on the camera is only FW400. So, you only need a FW400-FW400 cable. At 720p/60 it would require approx 25GB/30min. Less for 24f or 30f. At 1080i/60 it would use about 60GB/30 min.

Not exactly true. You can burn HD-DVD’s in DVD SP that will playback in HD on the now extinct, consumer HD-DVD players that came out to compete with consumer Blu-Ray players. (I used them for trade shows for a little while)
Another playback source to consider is the WD Media Player. I use these for trade shows as well as client presentations. I give one to a client, so I can bring a USB flash drive to their office and playback their video in HD. They love that!

No Macs have Blu-Ray drives. You have to purchase and install either an internal or external drive.

There are settings in the VTR menu area that let you adjust input levels. They are: Main Menu – VTR – Mic/Audio 1 & 2. Inside both of those are settings for limiter as well as dB pads for mics and line inputs.Hope that helps.

I would stick with Intel over anything older. With the new OS being Intel only, everything else is fading fast. Stay safe with an Intel machine.

I agree 100%. The whole Still Camera for video thing really blows me away. I would have never guessed it would taken off. See, what do I know?
