    Incidentally, since my original post this morning I learned the first graphic is called an “Over The Shoulder” or OTS.

    Still didn’t find out what the bar on the edge is called though.

  • Interesting concept! Would the fact that the layer’s visibility is off change the result of sourceRectAtTime? I’ll have to experiment with this. Thanks for the idea!

    I ended up finding an old script that apparently was used prior to the existence of sourceRectAtTime that physically scans for pixels to return an accurate sourceRect even when the characters have an opacity of 0. It renders slow as hell but it works.

  • Just a quick update, my script works properly (using sourceRectAtTime) if I use a different animator, like a scale animator. Just not opacity, which is really the effect I was going for. Is there any hope?

    Thanks for the replies,

    The source files need to be renamed because right now they’re all VID_0001.mp4 format and not only does that conflict with other filenames from the same project but I need to share these with other editors so descriptive filenames are required.

    In terms of renaming from the OS, I’m fine with that, but I need to screen the files first to determine their contents, and Premiere is the only application that can play them (Bridge actually locks up completely just by browsing the folder). They are 8k 10-bit 4:2:2 h.265 files so they have to be proxied to even play. But once I rename them from the OS it breaks all the links in Premiere and breaks the links to the proxies too. The proxies take hours upon hours to generate so I’d rather not have to do them twice.

    Found the solution for anyone wondering, or who comes upon this same problem via Google in the future.

    Add a new video layer to the top of your project. To that layer, add the effect Mask Generator->Alpha Mask. Drag the effect before Composite at the top to make it apply to the composite of the layers in the project below. Render as normal and you’ll have your matte file.

    SFK files only hold the visual representation of the audio waveform and are essentially useless from a user perspective.

    It sounds like somehow the source clips got deleted. Perhaps you inadvertently deleted them (when I first started editing in Vegas I accidentally deleted a few clips out of the Explorer view thinking I was only removing them from my project, but nope, that deletes them from the disk).

    You’ll need to copy your source clips back to the folder from a backup (or maybe check the recycle bin?) and then your project should open normally.

    Because an AVI isn’t, strictly speaking, a “Windows video file.” An AVI is just a container, and any video format can fit inside it. Your AVI file is using a format that Windows and Vegas don’t have inbuilt support for.

    Your best bet without installing codec packs (which can sometimes gum up the works on your PC) is to download a tool like AVICodec ( https://avicodec.duby.info/ ) and run your AVI files through it to see what codec they need, then install just that specific codec. Afterwards, restart your PC and try the AVI in Vegas again.

  • I’m no expert in this area so take my advice with a grain of salt, but the way I’d approach this is to begin by choosing my output frame rate (probably 24 or 30 depending on your audience), and then transcoding all the source footage to that frame rate before I even import it into premiere. It’s not gonna be pretty, but at least you won’t have to deal with the audio drift issue once you do your sync.
