Hi Max, I get the result you’re going for but could you describe how you have this animation set up in a little more detail? The part about not having keyframes has me baffled.

I’ve had that happen several times too on my Mac Pro at work but with CS5 and I also have auto-save unchecked. In my case it seems to happen when dragging an asset into AE to import or sometimes when dragging from the project panel into the comp viewer but it’s not a repeatable problem, it’s very random. Right as I release the mouse to drop whatever it is the auto-save box pops up for a split second and then AE crashes, but fortunately usually saves a copy before it dies. I’ll have to try Johnny’s suggestion to disable disk cache and see if that works for me too.

Although there is no automatic way to do that, you can do it manually fairly easily by just saving a frame from your project in your AE project folder.
The quickest way would probably be to:
– find a frame from a comp in your project that you want to use as the thumbnail
– set the resolution to 1/4 (Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+Shift+J)
– hit Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+S to save the frame as a still
– set the output module to jpeg, name it the same as the project and point it to the AE project folder.To make it even faster, you can set the default still frame file type to jpeg or whatever you prefer by going to Edit>Templates>Output Module and choosing a file type from the “Frame Default” menu.

That’s a well-known problem called “banding”, which you can search in the forums here and elsewhere and find a lot of info. Like Thomas said, adding noise helps but with the caveats he mentioned. It occurs because of the limited color range of the 8-bit format.

Check that your displacement image and the image of the face are the same size and that the “displacement map behavior” option is set to “center map”. However, I’m not sure the displacement map effect will work for the effect you’re trying to achieve.
FreeForm is good for that type of effect because it’s a mesh warp effect rather than just a displacement of pixels to fake distortion. It’s not included with AE, you have to purchase it, but the standard version isn’t too expensive. HTH

Despite my blabbing on and on about this I really don’t know much beyond what I’ve posted here. But yes, I believe that the GPU only works for raytracing in AE, although it does wonders in Premiere for editing as well. I haven’t used it that much yet because it’s on my home systems, not my work system…yet. Using an unapproved card might be a bit of a gamble, but like I said, it works great so far. I don’t think I would even use the ray-tracing in AE without the GPU acceleration because it’s just too slow and clunky.

I have a decklink hooked to a broadcast monitor and just checked this. If you’re on a Mac, go to the system preferences>black magic design and uncheck “remove field jitter when video is paused”. That got rid of the jagged edges for me.

Yeah, I have also used this font with no issues. What resolution is your comp? Check that the comp viewer window is set to 100% zoom and full resolution and that the Aspect Ratio Correction is not on and that your layer is not set to draft mode. Try it in a different comp, a different project, etc. and see if the problem persists. If so, could you provide more details about your project?
