You may be able to find a few tutorials or templates out there but it is unlikely that they would be exactly what you need and it still would take a significant amount of skill to integrate them into your video footage. No offense but it sounds like you might be fairly new to this type of graphic work so my suggestion would be to work with someone with a little more experience with motion graphics.

Oh, OK. In that case you were on the right track to begin with. Just put the logo/background layer and the clean background layer in the same comp and apply the “difference matte” effect to the layer with the logo and then set the “difference layer” in the effect to the clean background. The quality of this key may vary depending on how “different” the background and logo are. If you have a white edge on the logo that goes over a white part of the background there would be no difference in the two layers so it would not include that part of the image in the key and you would end up with a chunk of the logo missing. If you just need bird silhouettes, that can be done in AE fairly easily with particles and a simple bird animation made from solids. If you google “after effects bird flock” you find a bunch of tutorials and info. There’s a template for a bird particle on adobe exchange but I don’t have the link, sorry.

I think he means the logo is part of the same image as the background and he wants to separate the logo from the background and animate it. Is that right? If so, it would be easiest to cut the logo out in photoshop, so it’s on it’s own layer and then you’ll need to clone stamp the background to cover up the logo. Then import into AE as a comp with “retain layer sizes” option and you’ll be able to animate the logo. You can mask the logo in AE and clone stamp the background if you don’t have photoshop, I just think it’s easier in PS.

That is odd. I would suggest going to preferences>media & disk cache and empty disk cache and also clean database & cache. It could take a while if you have built up a lot of cache files. I’ve had strange things happen similar to what you’re describing and clearing out the cache has usually fixed it.

Maybe they just meant that they have used the TGA Video Codec in quicktime, which I assume would essentially be a TGA sequence inside of a quicktime movie wrapper so you can also have audio.

  • Hey Sebastian, I think I finally understand what you’re trying to do, But I’m not sure I understand what you mean about not having an image if you used track mattes. When you use a solid layer with a mask as a track matte the solid layers visibility is turned off so you don’t see it. The track matte would not move if the image below it moved, it is only there to cut out the alpha channel of the layer below it.

Maybe a simpler solution would be to just to pre-comp the animation of the image and then use that as your footage. That way you can just mask that pre-comp and not have to worry about the movement.

  • I’m on CS6 and it’s working as expected. You may have just not had the right layer selected or something.

  • I’m not sure I completely understand what you’re doing but it seems like for the moving layers you could just use a solid with a mask as a track matte without all of the shape layers and pre-composing? If the video layer and solid are both comp size then could you just cut/paste the mask to a solid and set it to be the matte for the video?
