  • It might just be my theory but I don’t think until Final Cut Pro is brought over to Cocoa (i.e. more or less a re-write of the app) will it see the full benefits of Snow Leopard (or OSX for that matter). This is a huge process on larger applications like this. Adobe has taken what, 4 or 5 versions in OSX to finally go over to this API for the majority of their apps (CS5, when ever it’s release). It look Apple 10 years to migrate something as fundamental as the Finder to this also.

When looking at OpenCL and thinking what can it accelerate and how much will affect things look at what something like the Velocity Engine did for the G4. As I understand it’s pretty similar type of code that efficiently runs on these co-processors that also runs on our current GPU’s. In a simple OpenCL test a Geforce 8800 GT GPU represents the horse-power of roughly 5 Xeon 2.8Ghz CPU’s. Add something like the nVidia Tesla and we’re talking perhaps a 100-fold of that processing power.

So far the Geforce GTX 285 has been a bit unreliable in performance (some apps not even working correctly). If the software ticks where sorted it would be THE choice hands down.

xlr8yourmac.com did note that for instance “The Sims 3” now works on the card. It’s just a game but still something that uses the GPU a lot. I also heard Maya has some issues but I think there where work-a-rounds to that.

In the end I think neither will make a HUGE difference in FCP. I might be wrong in this but I’ve yet to see a high dependency on the GPU there. Motion however is very picky on the GPU. I’ve also noticed considerable speed-increases in Color moving from a Radeon 2600 HD to a 4870.

  • It depends on what you do if you see a speed-increase to be honest. Some things are CPU based, some GPU, some constrained by I/O or RAM. Moving out 8-Core 2.8Ghz machine at the office from the stock ATI Radeon HD 2600 to a ATI Radeon HD 4870 made a huge preserved difference in Color. I sadly haven’t done any hard figure tests though.

I hear you Gustavo, however QTX solves a long-standing playback issue (or lack of feature). It seems we have 100% accurate playback now with zero screen-trashing, all frames in-sync nice and smooth with the displays refresh-rate. I had a few spots the past year where clients ask “why does the movie stutter on your computer screen?” where on the ref-monitor it doesn’t. I always claimed “software bug” (i.e QuickTime) which I’ve pretty much proven right now.

On the note QTX vs QT7 you will see that certain codecs in QT7 open a background process. The codecs I’ve found so far include Animation and h264. This makes me think a few codecs have been “moved over” completely to the new architecture where some (like Photo JPEG) lives in the older era. Still, QTX and all apps get access to the old stuff so for now it’s a decent / smooth crossroad.

I can also add the Final Cut Studio 2 seems to work fine on my system here at home in Snow Leopard. Given I don’t have any extra / external hardware.

Well I finally sorted this with a “collect project” workflow. It was still pretty much like stepping on glass (crashed twice doing it, but the recovered pre-crash-file worked).

August 28, 2009 at 10:38 am in reply to: OK Frame Rate riddle for you guys?

Sounds like you have images that you want to play-back at 7.5 fps in a 30 fps timeline? I.e each image is show for 3-4 frames or so?

I’m not 100% sure the best solution to achieve that. How does AE handle it if you import you image sequence. state that it’s a 7.5 fps sequence and then place it in a 30 fps comp?

Since you’re only dealing with such a small amount of footage you could also manually just add each frame for 3 or 4 frames. That’s what I’ve done when we do animatic work here at the studio.

One issue at the moment with having activated OpenGL previews (even if only the “interactive” setting) is that you get zero feedback on your video-output during the time you change something. It will update AFTER you’ve done a change but yeah… This renders the feature perhaps not useless but limited in it’s use in a lot of environments sadly.

Perhaps CS5 will give us both? GPU acceleration AND video-output? One can always hope… 🙂

Lenscare by Frischluft is a terrific plugin. It however only works in After Effects. Depending on the effect you are trying to create it might not be a bad idea round-tripping into that application however.

I can just “verify” the bugs reported here, given to me they are more of the erratic / random nature. Things got much worse for me when moving from AE7 to CS3 / CS4 on an Intel machine.

    1. Random lock-ups during audio scrubbing
    2. After Effects crashes on quit (sometimes has resulted in a wipe of the pref-file which is a bit of a nuisance)
    3. Crashes when sorting files in my project window (i.e dragging / dropping them in folders, renaming and so forth).
    4. Crashes during final renders. This was corrected after consulting your support (trashing preferences did the trick oddly enough).

However all these bugs where as I can remember them new since we moved to our Intel MacPro with CS3 or later. I do tend to file a report if a crash happens and the utility pops up in my face.

  • You can fix the above very odd standard Adobe chose to start with CS4. I’ll have to look up the links on how it’s done however (you edit two config files).
