Thanks for such a quick reply.
We do work in uncompressed 8- and 10-bit, ProRes and RED. Both SD and HD but our output tends to be 1080p (10-bit uncompressed) or 2K (ProRes 4444) at most. Occasionally we get DPX into our suite, it’s quite rare, but it happens.
Would performance be affected if we went for a 2x Quadro 4000 vs say 1x Quardro 4000 and 1x Radeon 5770 (i.e. does DaVinci utilize both the render and gui GPU for processing)? Also I guess performance would still be vastly superior to what we’re seeing in Color at the moment.

Would DaVinci benifit from 2x Quadro 4000 cards vs 1x Quadro 4000 + 1x GT120, both placed in the comp?
One of the Quadro’s would drive the GUI of course.

Interesting and thanks. I’m just wondering if any other app would be able to use the non-GUI GPU as Resolve does. This is why one could motivate two Quadro 4000-cards. The main contenders today are Adobe CS5 and a number of Premier and After Effects plug-ins that are OpenGL and / or CUDA accelerated.

Interesting and perhaps a little sad. But I presume other software won\’t use a dedicated CUDA GPU so a dual Quadro 4000-setup would make sense for a lot of people then running CS5 and DaVinci on the same system.
I don\’t get how much more work it can be to just release a multitude of GPU\’s when you\’re already writing drivers for a given chipset. Anyhow.. Nice to see you\’re on top of things as much as you can. We might be going into DaVinci-land 2011.

Is it the Quadro 4000 that’s slower than the GTX285 or is it the ATI / nVidia combo that slows things down? A bit sad to hear of LESS performance with the latest and greatest but nice you’ve sorted out mixed cards.
Would two Quadro 4000 give any benefit at all or is CUDA-rendering “per card” only? I’m thinking of other apps that accelerate with CUDA as these normally use your main GPU for the job.

Speaking for “updates”, support for AJA-bords would mean a lot to us. We’re looking into DaVinci and Smoke to enhance our studio but it feels a bit “meh” we’re forced to have two systems for the jobb.

Depending on the amount of dust to remove and how the scenes look, AE’s paint-tool can do wonders with some manual labor. Imagineers Mocha Pro also has a very powerful removal tool.
It does very much depend on how the shots look however and these tools aren’t cheap.

Even if I’m not a DaVinci-user yet, I do use Apple Color extensively and this is one of the single most used features I love for color-correcting or grading in there.
– Tweak saturation in all colors or get more of a selective-color look with 1 secondary
– Tweak hue in all colors with 1 secondary (the same secondary if you want to).It’s awesome for so many things I don’t even know where to start. I would have thought this was a “standard” grading features but evidently it’s not.
