Get the EMW with the shelved response & the XLR connector. You can’t go wrong with that choice. I’ve got about 5 of them and are my goto choice. Remember they will require 48 volt phantom which should be available on your camera.

Handheld it’s the Electrovoice RE50 and then everything else. It’s the de facto standard in on camera mics. The Countryman EMW or B3 lavs are great performers and reasonably priced.
For effective use of lavs you’ll need a wireless system, the Sennheiser G3 series with the plug on transmitter for the handheld mic in addition to the beltpack tx for the lav is a good value at around $600.
For a shotgun mic the Rode NTG-3 is a pretty good bang for the buck mic. What are you planning to use for a mixer to connect the microphones to the camera? A K-Tek Avalon series aluminium boom pole is a good choice for student use. Don’t forget headphones, shockmounts, windscreens and connecting cables.

There’s very little low end on the 7D track so it sounds tinny. The H4n track sounds much better. Use the built in mic of the 7D to create a guide track for the H4n track so they will sync to picture with Pluraleyes.

Would it be easier to raise the dialog than bring the music down?

The Azden has a switchable low cut filter that rolls off the low end at 200hz by 6 db, make sure the filter is in the OFF position. That should help to “thicken” up your tracks.

The Azden SGM 2x comes with two capsules, the shorter one is an omni capsule and the longer one is the very directional shotgun capsule. Which one are you using?

Any of the Sound Devices mixers will be just fine. The Mix-pre, the 302 or the 442.

There really isn’t any numerical value that can be applied. Would 6db less music be too much or not enough? Perhaps you need to run the voice tracks thru a compressor to make them sound louder. When the balance between dialog & music sounds right to you then it is right.

I doubt it and unless the audio is really bad no one except you will know or care. It’s always about the picture.
