Was I asked a trick Question?
No, you were asked a prick question. The DP should have stepped in and answered, but it certainly sounds like the guy was just being a jerk. I’d tell him to go get coffee while the DP and I work the shot out. I’ve been both a director and DP for over 30 years and have never been asked that question. Best advice… deflect jerks with humor and honesty. And it goes without saying to avoid hiring or working with that person again. Life’s too short.

I agree that loading via SDI and my deck seems like the best option because loading via sony’s xdcam software doesn’t ask me for the specific clips needed to redig a sequence. I have to already know which disks are in the sequence, as opposed to a traditional batch digitize where the software asks me for the correct tape for each clip.
In the case of the project I was redigitizing this week, I have over 100 XDCAM disks but only wanted to redig a 3 minute sequence (the trailer for the documentary.) I just ended up writing down the name of each disk used in the sequence… something I could do because the sequence was so short.
I just wish the XDCAM transfer software would help this lazy editor know which disks were used.

Ok… I’m a US producer/cameraman and have shot in Canada twice lately. The first time I tried to do everything by the book. Applied for permits at the Canadian embassy, etc. Got the runaround every time and was unable to penetrate the bureaucracy in time for the shoot. I was then advised by a canadian company to just tell the border guards that we were a news crew. There’s a huge exception in the Canadian work laws that allows news crews to travel freely.
It worked like a charm.Second time I decided to just rent gear in Ottawa and hire a local sound guy and grip. That worked great too. I didn’t have to sweat the border crossing.

April 1, 2008 at 5:12 pm in reply to: Canon reliability concerns? PS, no kidding, I was about to buy 2 of these.Just my two cents… based upon my own experience with the XL-H1. I had three big problems in a row… The CCD died on the first one… the tape transport failed on the second, and the tape pitch was off on the third… making tapes shot on it unable to play on Sony decks. They were able to fix it, but after my three strikes, I sold the camera and went with Sony.

I actually leave the wheels on all the time. I’ve never had them damaged in over 3 years of heavy travel. So far, no one has ever dinged me for an oversize bag… only weight. (Plus a replacement trolly (wheels) is pretty inexpensive.
I was in Salt Lake checking in for a flight to DC the other day and watched the TSA guys flinging all the bags several feet to the belt. We complained about it and stood there and watched them put our bags on the conveyer more carefully. After it’s out of sight… it takes a hell of a lot of abuse.

Unfortunately, this is about 61 lbs. If I drop one pepper, one rifa and 2 stands, it comes in at 49lbs. I’m afraid that paying for extra baggage and weight is just the new cost of doing business… especially with United now charging extra for anything more than one checked bag.

My traveling kit is pretty flexible… 2 Lowel Rifa lights (1 Rifa 66 and 1 Rifa 55), 2 100 watt LTM Pepper fresnels, 1 200 watt LTM Pepper fresnel, and one Lowel Omni light. I also carry a Flexfill silk reflector and a few dimmers and clamps. It is good for just about any kind of interview or small b-roll situation. I carry everything in a Kata Palms 3 case. All the stands are small Lowel units. I’m very happy with it.

This happened to me over the weekend. As a workaround, I deleted all the imported clips from the FCP bin and reimported the whole folder containing the captured media. I’d love to find a cure for the problem however.
