Does anyone know of a faster way to redig an old project that was shot on XDCAM-HD?

The batch digitize feature brings up the normal capture window, but since all these disks were loaded using the file-import-xdcam method, it won’t work. My solution, which took quite some time, was to
simply manually reload and relink all the disks used in the timeline.

Maybe I should capture by SDI to avoid this hassle next time.

    Anyone have a better solution?

    eric,

The answer is to media manage your sequence and use an XD-CAM deck capable of more than FAM (File access mode). We’ve used this workflow on dozens of shows. It works. You will be “playing back” the shots realtime and capturing via SDI. This will take some time, but it will be faster than loading ALL of the full clips and reconnecting.

Read the manual on media management. There are plenty of pitfalls depending on your project.

[Eric Temple] ” these disks were loaded using the file-import-xdcam method, it won’t work.”

Why doesn’t it work? If you transfer the clips the same way you did it the first time (Sony Transfer software) and put them in the same location (don’t import into FCP) it will bring the project back just like you last had it. We have done this and it works fine. Did use bring the clips in completely or did you trim the clips in the transfer software?

I agree that loading via SDI and my deck seems like the best option because loading via sony’s xdcam software doesn’t ask me for the specific clips needed to redig a sequence. I have to already know which disks are in the sequence, as opposed to a traditional batch digitize where the software asks me for the correct tape for each clip.

In the case of the project I was redigitizing this week, I have over 100 XDCAM disks but only wanted to redig a 3 minute sequence (the trailer for the documentary.) I just ended up writing down the name of each disk used in the sequence… something I could do because the sequence was so short.

I just wish the XDCAM transfer software would help this lazy editor know which disks were used.

    Eric,

This is the classic “off-line to on-line” workflow that’s been in use forever. For this workflow, “media manager” is your friend.
