Instead of throwing out the word Best I thinks it’s more important to determine what and why he doesn’t like his encoded material?
I’d be willing to bet its a workflow issue.
Saw a producer once who paid 2k for Cinemacraft SP and till asked “why doesn’t it look like the original HD
There are free tools out there which do a better job than 90% of all encoders

I always forget about about Logic 🙂
Let’s not forget to mention the huge learning curve your going have to get over. Also Logics tools still don’t output a CMF image…..you’ll need another tool for that called Blu Streak.
I’m just trying to give you an understanding the scope of taking on a BD project from a newbie pov. I’ve been in your situation too. You have to have a true passion for this to get over that curve….
Not trying to scar you but it’s not an easy thing -
The DVD authoring tool he already has does all that as well 🙂

DVD authoring is not editing so all needs to be done within an editor first
DVDSP can provide thumbnails for each button but you are limited on the amount on each page per the DVD spec.
There’s not thing really that’s going to speed up your workflow so I’d stick with what you have

Correct Down Conversion is everything here!!
Adjusting your GOP will do you no good and adds extra unneeded I frames. Only times Ive ever adjusted GOP structures was back in the day when we either had to set a DL break point on a certain area or had a multi-angle project. Alexander is very much on the mark with VBR encodes in Compressor. Compressor is notorious for bitrates spikes. But this all depends on the length of your program. If you can go with a straight CBR of about 6mb/s then that is the advice weve given around here for years.
As with any encode, I always advice check your bitrates with a analyzer…many are free.
BTW….Compressor is know as the worst encoder on planet in the world of professional DVD production….so just a small heads up there 🙂

No Maestro and DVDSP are the same program. Apple bought Spruce and made it their own. They did leave out some nice features, like some helpful pre-mastering capabilities, but they are 95% the same.
Even the outboard player youre referring to was later called DVD@cess by Apple.
The issue seemed to arise from user complaints of incapability. With such large arrays of user OSs version and system set ups there were bound to be issues.
Remember that DVD and the internet are like oil and water – What your client wants is not reliable anymore.
